Okay, let’s talk about who bites the dust in Stranger Things Season 5. Fans have been bracing themselves for major character deaths, and honestly, Netflix has been pretty careful with its core group so far. We’ve seen supporting characters like Barb, Bob, Billy, and Eddie fall, but the show loves to play with our emotions – remember the whole fake-out with Hopper in Season 3? But now, as we head into the final stretch, things are definitely changing. Consider this your spoiler warning for Volume 1 of Season 5 – we’re about to dive into who doesn’t make it.
As a huge fan, I was on the edge of my seat watching the first four episodes of Stranger Things Season 5! The danger felt real with everything happening in Hawkins and Vecna’s plan coming together, but honestly, it was a bit of a relief that no one actually died. I know a lot of us were bracing for major losses, especially with how much trouble Karen and Ted Wheeler got into. The Duffer brothers, the showrunners, recently told Variety why they made that choice…
From the moment we decided to explore Will’s powers this season, we knew how Volume 1 had to conclude. We needed a really low point – the kids being captured – to highlight the positive development of Will gaining those powers. That balance – Vecna taking the children as the low point – was central to our planning for the end of Volume 1.
Who Will Die In Stranger Things Season 5 (If Anybody)?
Even though everyone survives the first part of Stranger Things Season 5, it doesn’t mean the show is over without any deaths. The biggest and most impactful deaths usually happen later in the season, and since this season is divided into three volumes, we can expect at least one major character to die in both Volume 2 and Volume 3. This would increase the tension and make those losses feel even more powerful.
Despite the increasing danger, viewers shouldn’t anticipate a massive number of character deaths. When asked about this by Variety, Matt Duffer clarified that Stranger Things isn’t aiming to be as shockingly deadly as Game of Thrones. He hopes the deaths in the new volume will be surprising, but assured fans there won’t be a single event comparable to the infamous ‘Red Wedding,’ as that would be too grim.
That point makes sense to an extent. Since the show centers around kids, it’s important to avoid excessive deaths. There are plenty of ways to create tension and make things feel dangerous without resorting to killing characters, and any deaths that do occur should feel meaningful to the character, the story, and the show’s overall message. However, Stranger Things also needs to be willing to kill off some characters. If everyone survives despite the dangers of the Upside Down, it wouldn’t feel realistic.
It’s difficult to believe Will or Eleven will be killed off, as they’re the central characters and have experienced the most throughout the series. Considering Will recently came out as gay and Eleven has never had a typical life, their deaths wouldn’t feel satisfying. While almost anyone else could potentially die – fans have long feared for Steve Harrington, though many hope he survives – it’s important that any death is emotionally impactful and serves a purpose, rather than being a shock for shock’s sake. If the Duffer brothers do choose to kill off characters, this seems like the right way to approach it.
The first part of Stranger Things Season 5 is available to watch on Netflix now. The second part will be released on Christmas Day, and the final part on New Year’s Eve.
