The fifth and final season of Stranger Things ended with a powerful, extended episode focused on the characters making difficult choices. Eleven and her friends faced their biggest challenge yet, as the world’s survival depended on the decisions they made. Dustin successfully uncovered Vecna’s plan to merge the Abyss with Hawkins, leading Eleven and the group to devise a strategy to defeat Vecna, save Holly Wheeler and the other children he’d taken, and finally destroy the Upside Down.
As expected, the initial plan quickly fell apart. Vecna retaliated by using Hopper against them, severing Eleven’s mental connection and creating an opening to reach the kids. Things got even worse when Lieutenant Akers attacked Hopper’s group, seemingly killing Kali, forcing Eleven to change their strategy. In the end, everything depended on the decisions Eleven made.
Eleven Chose To Enter the Abyss

Eleven had been preparing for months, and as we saw in Season 5, she’s an excellent jumper. Since she couldn’t connect with Vecna mentally, she knew she had to reach the Abyss directly. Luckily, Vecna had already merged the worlds, allowing Eleven to leap across the floating mountains of the Upside Down and travel to the Mind Flayer’s home dimension.
It turned out to be the correct decision, as Dustin had misjudged the Mind Flayer. He’d thought Vecna was in charge, but it was actually the other way around. Flashbacks showed the Mind Flayer had been controlling Vecna since he was a child, and Vecna was simply following its orders—the Mind Flayer even tried to prevent him from remembering certain events (as seen in the play, The First Shadow). Vecna wasn’t interested in being saved, and instead chose to join forces with the Mind Flayer, creating a close partnership.
The battle against Vecna and the Mind Flayer required a two-pronged attack: Nancy led the charge against the Mind Flayer while Eleven confronted Vecna. Eleven was nearly defeated, but Will used his link to the hive mind to temporarily weaken Vecna, giving her a chance. Ultimately, Joyce delivered the final, brutal strike, savagely attacking Vecna until she severed his head.
Eleven (Apparently) Chose To Die When the Upside Down Was Destroyed

Okay, so the kids’ plan seemed to be working – they set off a bomb to mess with whatever keeps the Upside Down… well, down. But then, total shocker, Eleven decided to stay there! It seemed like she thought it was the only way to finally close the book on everything. Turns out, Kali had been pushing for this all along, and Hopper was really against it, but when the military swooped in and grabbed all of us the second we got out, it felt like Eleven didn’t have a choice. It was a pretty intense moment, honestly.
It was so bittersweet watching the end of Stranger Things Season 5. We finally beat the monsters and destroyed the Upside Down, but it really hit me that some problems just aren’t so simple. I was shocked when Eleven seemed to slip away from the soldiers and went back through the portal, and by the time Mike and the others realized what was happening, it was too late. Everything just… collapsed. It looked like she didn’t make it when the Upside Down was destroyed, and it was heartbreaking.
Mike Is Convinced Eleven Secretly Survived the Upside Down’s Destruction

Mike believes Eleven’s story isn’t over. The fifth season of Stranger Things jumps forward to May 1989, about a year and a half after the Upside Down is destroyed. Mike has been thinking about inconsistencies – Eleven’s unlikely escape from the soldiers and a brief flicker he saw right before she seemingly died. He figures Eleven and Kali worked together on one last plan: a desperate attempt to save Eleven and allow her to live safely.
Mike thinks Kali didn’t actually die, but was transformed by Hopper’s love for Eleven. Even though Kali accepted her fate, Mike believes she wanted Eleven to survive. He theorizes that Kali remained alive in a version of Hawkins Lab within the Upside Down, using her powers to help Eleven. Kali created illusions to hide Eleven from soldiers, allowing her to escape through the tunnels. The final illusion showed Eleven still in the Upside Down, and it flickered just before Kali passed away.
If Mike’s idea is right, Eleven has accepted the power Kali shared with her. Believing her family and friends will be safer if she’s not around, she’s gone away to find peace and protect them, seeking a quiet life somewhere far away. It’s a hopeful thought, and it actually explains some confusing parts of Stranger Things Season 5 – details some viewers noticed that seemed like mistakes at first. Everything suggests Eleven is still alive.
What Happened to the Rest of Stranger Things’ Heroes

The final season of Stranger Things didn’t kill off any of the main characters, which was unexpected. The story jumps ahead to 1989 and concludes with a graduation ceremony, where Dustin delivers a powerful speech as valedictorian. Over the past year and a half, the usual high school cliques seemed to have faded, and Dustin’s speech about the value of community and acceptance resonated with everyone. The group then shared one last Dungeons & Dragons game before heading off to pursue their individual paths.
The original Hawkins crew had all started new chapters in their lives, but they used their graduation as an excuse to reunite. Nancy had left college to pursue journalism, Steve was now teaching at Hawkins High – covering sports and sex education – Robin was happily settled with Vickie, and Jonathan was making a film about consumerism, portraying it as a relentless, almost monstrous force. They all agreed to get together monthly, though whether they’d actually manage it remained to be seen, as everyone was busy building their own independent lives.
I was so thrilled to see Hopper back as chief, and even happier that he and Joyce finally got together! The way he proposed was just perfect. But the best part? They’re leaving Hawkins! Hopper got a job offer in Montauk, New York, and it felt like a full-circle moment. Apparently, the show was originally going to be about Montauk, based on some real conspiracy theories. It’s a clever nod to the show’s origins, and honestly, it makes me wonder if they’re going to run into another crazy situation out there! It’s such a great way to end the season, and I’m already excited to see what happens next for them.
