A new animated spinoff of Stranger Things, called Tales From ’85, will take place between seasons two and three of the original show. Just a short time after leaving Hawkins, Netflix is bringing viewers back with this exciting new series. The first trailer has been released, confirming the debut date of April 23rd. While details about the new monsters from the Upside Down are still unknown, the creators have hinted at a significant, previously unexplored story element within the original series’ timeline.
According to showrunner Eric Robles in an interview with Empire Magazine, the new series will feel like a natural continuation of the original, as if it could be a live-action season. He explained that the goal was to return to Hawkins and create a story that felt like a missing piece of the show. Unlike previous seasons focused on global threats, this story will have smaller stakes, centering on the kids working to protect their town rather than the world.
Winter Is An Important Part of the Stranger Things Spinoff’s Narrative
According to producer Robles, the upcoming Stranger Things spinoff is set during winter to enhance the mystery surrounding the new monster. He described Hawkins as being completely covered in snow, creating a sense of danger. Robles shared that he was inspired by Jaws, aiming to create a similar feeling of dread. Trailer footage shows the creatures moving beneath the snow like a shark in water, with their movements creating a striking visual effect reminiscent of a shark’s fin breaking the surface.
Interestingly, Empire magazine implies there’s only one monster, which differs from the Tales From ’85 trailer that hints at at least four. A likely explanation is that this monster changes forms, similar to how the Demogorgons grew in Season 2. Some fans believe it could be a Vine Blight – a Dungeons & Dragons creature that harms plants – possibly combined with a Bodytaker Plant that operates as a single, shared consciousness. This combination could account for the monster’s varying looks.
Look, as a huge fan of Stranger Things, I’m thrilled to hear Netflix isn’t planning on stopping with Season 5. They’re already moving fast with this animated spin-off, and even better, they’ve confirmed another one based on The First Shadow play – which, honestly, gave us so much crucial backstory. It totally makes sense to keep expanding the story with new shows that fit into the timeline, and I’m really hoping they’ll continue to build out this amazing world even further. I’m excited to see where they take it!
