Stranger Things Star Reveals Scrapped Final Line for Character (And It’s Actually Devastating)

The final episode of Stranger Things wrapped up the show’s supernatural storyline, aiming to give each character a memorable farewell. From Dustin’s tribute to Eddie at graduation to Steve, Nancy, Jonathan, and Robin reconnecting on the roof, the episode was filled with emotional goodbyes. Interestingly, one scene originally had a different final line, and learning what it was – and why the creators ultimately cut it – is surprisingly heartbreaking.

The first part of the series finale’s climactic battle with Vecna culminates in a brutal scene where Joyce Byers attacks and ultimately decapitates him with an ax. Jamie Campbell Bower, who played Vecna, recently shared in an interview with The Tonight Show that Vecna was originally intended to say “please don’t” as his final words, but this line was ultimately cut from the final version of the episode.

Stranger Things’ Scrapped Vecna Line Held a Key Connection to The First Shadow

So, I was listening to an interview with Jamie Bower, and he let slip something really cool. Apparently, they actually changed a line for Vecna in Season 4 after it was filmed! And get this – they almost did it again in Season 5! It would have been another big link to the Stranger Things play, The First Shadow, which I’m super excited about. It’s neat to hear how much thought goes into these details, even after everything’s been shot.

I was aiming to communicate ‘please don’t’ through my performance. I’m not sure if anyone has seen The First Shadow, the play based on Stranger Things that explores Henry Creel’s history. In the play, Henry and Joyce meet, and I wanted to show a moment where his humanity could shine through, suggesting there was still a chance to save him.

During season four, there’s a scene where Eleven confronts Vecna – they’re in the snowball fight, and she says ‘hi.’ Just before that moment, I added a growl. While re-recording the audio (ADR), I realized it sounded like I was saying ‘you,’ so I asked if I could include that in the recording. They agreed, and we tried it out. I didn’t want to interrupt Eleven’s line or make it less impactful, but we wanted to see how it sounded with my addition.

We gave it a shot, and honestly, it was fantastic! Then we got to re-recording dialogue for season five, and things got a little rough. I was struggling to get the lines out, and all I could think was ‘please don’t change it!’ But we tried a few takes, and it just wasn’t clicking. It didn’t quite sound right, but the feeling behind it was definitely there. I really tried, but it just wasn’t a good take.

Stranger Things season 5 is now streaming on Netflix.
