Fans of Stranger Things are eagerly anticipating the final two parts of the last season, which will conclude this year and begin next year with a New Year’s Eve finale. Now that season 5 is coming, attention is turning to what’s next for the franchise, including a spinoff series called Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. The showrunner for the spinoff has recently shared how they figured out the right approach for a successful spinoff, along with some exciting first-look images – and it looks fantastic!
The new animated special, Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, is set between seasons 2 and 3 of the show. According to showrunner Eric Robles, fitting the story into that timeframe was tricky, especially because Eleven closed the gate to the Upside Down at the end of season 2. The team needed a way to introduce new monsters without being able to directly access the Upside Down, and Robles found a solution by carefully examining the existing storyline for possibilities. He explained, “I really dug into the show looking for any way to make it work, and I eventually landed on an idea that I thought was perfect.”

According to production designer Rob Robles, the core concept is a blend of the science from Hawkins Lab and the strange substance of the Upside Down. He also hinted that the closing of the gateway will trigger a series of events, affecting the creatures appearing in our world.
Eric Robles Addresses Potential Future Seasons of Stranger Things: Tales From ’85

If the first season of Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 does well, the next challenge will be figuring out how to create multiple seasons, given that the story takes place over a limited period. According to Robles, any future installments would continue under the Tales From ’85 name. He also explained that the first season unfolds gradually, tracking time hour by hour and day by day, which should allow the show to continue for as many seasons as necessary.
Robles stated they can absolutely continue the show if necessary. They explained that if they were to reach the season 25 finale, the storyline would naturally align with the established timeline – specifically, Dustin going to camp and Elle and Mike being in a serious relationship. This would allow them to tell the complete story over as many seasons as it requires.

I’m really excited that season 2 will feel similar to the first one – it had a real edge to it, you know? It wasn’t just a lighthearted adventure. The kids were genuinely facing serious stuff, and the creators aren’t pulling any punches this time around. It’s not a ‘don’t worry, everything will be okay’ kind of show – you really don’t know what’s going to happen, and that’s what makes it so gripping!
Robles hinted at some impressive monsters, promising they’ll be more than just standalone creatures. He explained the show will have a larger, season-long mystery connecting everything, and fans are eager to see how it unfolds for the beloved characters of Stranger Things.
Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 is set to release in 2026.
