Stranger Things Theory Reveals Only 2 Characters Can Defeat Vecna (& It Was Set Up 3 Years Ago)

A popular new theory about Stranger Things suggests that only two characters have the power to defeat Vecna, and clues about this showdown were planted three years ago. Created by the Duffer brothers, Stranger Things has become one of the most defining shows of the past decade, and is easily Netflix’s biggest hit. While a spin-off animated series is planned, the upcoming fifth season feels like the true end of the original story.

The kids in Stranger Things are facing their most dangerous enemy yet. Vecna has been revealed as the mastermind behind everything, connected to the Upside Down and using his powers to control it. At the end of season 4, he opened portals to the Upside Down, setting the stage for a complete takeover of Hawkins. But could the show have already hinted at how the story will end?

Was Stranger Things’ D&D Game Secretly Foreshadowing?

The character Vecna was first mentioned in the first episode of Stranger Things season 4, but not through a direct introduction. Instead, we learned about him through the Dungeons & Dragons game led by Eddie Munson. In retrospect, this scene was clearly meant to hint at things to come, as Eddie’s story described Vecna as a figure thought to be dead who had returned. This cleverly foreshadowed the later flashbacks revealing that Eleven didn’t actually kill Vecna, but instead sent him to the Upside Down.

The Dungeons & Dragons game isn’t just about a returning villain; it introduces Vecna as the main threat in a storyline called “The Cult of Vecna,” supported by devoted followers. This likely hints that Vecna will lead a cult in the show, building on his ability to control others through the Mind Flayer. The recently updated Mind Flayer, featured in the Stranger Things: The First Shadow Broadway play, seems destined to play a significant role, potentially allowing it to influence events in Hawkins.

The latest season of Stranger Things concludes with a tense Dungeons & Dragons game running alongside a basketball match. Only two players remain to confront Vecna, and they face a difficult choice: escape, or make a final, desperate stand. The show heavily featured the D&D campaign, even using it for a cliffhanger opening, and it would be fitting if that campaign ultimately foreshadowed how the entire series ends. Will the final showdown involve just two heroes left to fight Vecna?

Who Could Stranger Things’ Two Last Heroes Be?

If this theory holds true, only two of the main young characters from Stranger Things will directly confront Vecna in the final showdown. The likely candidate is Eleven, the show’s central figure and the one Vecna seems most afraid of. The recent season heavily focused on restoring her powers, and previews suggest she’s become even stronger. It wouldn’t make sense for her to sit out the ultimate battle, so she’s almost certainly one of the two fighters.

Okay, so everyone’s been speculating about who Vecna is really after in the final season, and honestly, I think it’s going to be Will. It makes the most sense to me! Will’s disappearance is what kicked everything off in the first place – if they hadn’t been looking for him, they never would have found Eleven or even discovered the Upside Down. Plus, the beginning of season 5 seems to be really centering things around Will again, and they’ve even changed things so that Vecna was involved in his disappearance way back in season 1. The trailers are definitely hinting that Vecna still has a thing for Will, so I’m pretty convinced he’s the key!

One popular idea is that Will Byers will become a powerful figure, possibly a sorcerer, as hinted at in a recent episode. This could be because of his history with the Upside Down. It would be great to see Will overcome his past as a victim and fight alongside Eleven in the final showdown with Vecna. However, this raises an interesting question: what happens to the other characters if only Eleven and Will are left? We’ll find out soon enough.
