Strictly Come Dancing’s Amy Dowden to take break from show for mastectomy procedure

Amy Dowden is stepping away from Strictly Come Dancing to have another mastectomy.

The dancer clarified that her surgery wasn’t for a new cancer diagnosis, but was recommended by her doctors during a recent check-up.

She announced the good news on Instagram with a video, saying doctors are optimistic she’ll have a smooth recovery. She’s eager to return to Strictly Come Dancing once she’s fully healed.

I’ll definitely miss being there in person, but I’ll be cheering everyone on from home! Thank you all for your continued support. Sending Welsh love, Amy.

In May 2023, Dowden shared that she had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. She had discovered a lump a month earlier.

Following her cancer diagnosis, the dancer had a mastectomy and chemotherapy treatment, which meant she couldn’t participate in Strictly Come Dancing that season.

She came back the next year and partnered with JB Gill, but unfortunately, a foot injury forced her to leave the competition early. Lauren Oakley then stepped in to take her place.

Oliver Dowden was a contestant on this year’s Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with Thomas Skinner, who previously appeared on The Apprentice. However, they were the first couple voted off by the public.

When Tess asked about her experience on Strictly, Dowden shared that she’s gotten to know Tom really well and finds him incredibly sweet. She also said he’s been very supportive of her.

We’ve shared a lot of laughs and put in a tremendous amount of effort. While a celebratory moment like a glitterball would have been wonderful, I’ve realized over the past few years that true happiness, good health, and simply being alive are the most important things of all.

I’ve become close friends with someone I’ll cherish forever, and I wouldn’t trade our connection for anything. I was a little disappointed that one of the contestants who specializes in ballroom dance didn’t get a chance to perform it, but as you know, the past three years have been challenging for me personally.

I’d completely lost my confidence as a dancer, but being in the room with you, seeing your big smile and hearing your laugh, instantly brought it back. I really appreciate that.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on BBC One and iPlayer on Saturday 8th November at 6:25pm.
