The judges on Strictly Come Dancing are expecting even higher levels of performance as the show gets closer to the final.
Actress Alex Kingston was upset by criticism she received this week after finding a particularly difficult dance routine – the Paso Doble set to Jamie Texidor’s ‘Amparito Roca’ – challenging.
Even with her partner Johannes Radebe’s constant support and encouragement during rehearsals, Alex struggled with the performance.
Alex said the practice felt harder than normal because she couldn’t use song lyrics to help keep time with her movements.
Following her dance, host Tess Daly greeted her and the judges, asking if she felt relieved after a difficult week.
Alex replied hesitantly, looking a little downcast. “Honestly, I think I could try again,” he said.
The judges playfully cautioned Alex, telling her not to speak about potentially being in the dance-off tomorrow night (Sunday, November 9th), as if she might accidentally make it happen.
Motsi Mabuse admitted she felt a little unsure of the performer, and Shirley Ballas added that the performance unfortunately seemed to be missing energy and emotion.
Anton du Beke noticed Alex seemed a bit anxious, and Craig Revel Horwood pointed out that their dance routine needed more energy and flair, specifically commenting on their posture and movements.
Alex received a solid 30 points from the judges for her Paso Doble, but she appeared disappointed when she spoke with Claudia Winkleman after the dance.
It really struck me when she got emotional and explained that she has a hard time with numbers – she called it numerical dyslexia. She said it makes even simple counting incredibly difficult, and you could just tell how much it impacted her daily life.
“Don’t be upset,” Claudia said, gently reaching for her. “You did a wonderful job.”
Following a warm group hug with her fellow competitors on Strictly, the presenter explained that it’s okay not to enjoy every single dance performance.
“No, but I really enjoy this dance – it’s so expressive,” Alex said, close to tears. “It’s just that I’m used to dancing with songs and words, and I didn’t realize I couldn’t have that here.”
Hopefully, Alex can avoid the dance-off and come back with a stronger performance next week, using a song that better showcases her talents.
Strictly Come Dancing results show airs Sunday at 7:10pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
