Strictly’s Tasha Ghouri defended by Alexandra Burke after training backlash

As a fan who has witnessed the magical transformation of contestants on Strictly Come Dancing, I wholeheartedly support Tasha Ghouri and applaud her courage to take on this incredible journey. Having been there myself, albeit several years ago, I can attest that Strictly is more than just a dance competition; it’s an opportunity to learn intricate dance styles, make lasting friendships, and most importantly, have fun!

Alexandra Burke stands up for Strictly Come Dancing competitor Tasha Ghouri against those who argue she benefits from her prior dance background, implying an unfair edge.

On the popular ITV show Love Island, Ghouri gained recognition, and more recently, became the second individual who is deaf to participate in Strictly Come Dancing, following in the footsteps of Rose Ayling-Ellis from EastEnders, who triumphed in 2021.

Yet, she’s faced strong criticism for her participation due to some spectators worrying that her expertise in “popular street” dancing might unfairly influence the contest.

2017 competitor Burke clarified her stance in a recent interview with The Sun, addressing allegations that surfaced due to her background in music and theater.

Tasha hasn’t received training in Latin and ballroom dancing. I myself haven’t had any experience with Latin or ballroom dancing either.

In essence, she should be allowed to thrive, as it appears she’s enjoying herself immensely.

Later, Burke characterized Strictly as an exceptional chance for someone like him to master those complex dance styles, given that he was starting later in life compared to many professional dancers.

Burke explained, “I valued that opportunity since I’d long dreamed of learning Latin and ballroom dancing, but growing up, we didn’t have the means to do so. So, everyone should allow others to enjoy themselves, for it’s wonderful to be a part of such a joyful experience.

She exclaimed: “It’s delightful! Dancing releases wonderful endorphins, and I hope everyone experiences their special moments.

Burke’s statements seem similar to what Ghouri stated earlier to TopMob last month: “My training was in commercial dance, contrary to ballroom.

I haven’t had the chance to dance with a partner up until now, and truth be told, I haven’t danced much for the past few years either. This type of dancing is an entirely new experience for me, yet I’m eager to pick it up!

She stated: “I’ve come for my own sake, for my loved ones, and for my companions. I aim to accomplish this not just for myself, but also for those watching – the aspiring Tashas battling self-doubt. This endeavor is dedicated to them.

“So that’s going to be my motivation through this.”

So far, Ghouri’s journey is progressing positively. In weeks 3 and 4, this Love Island alum took the lead on the Strictly Come Dancing leaderboard, even earning three perfect scores of 10 in week 4. Moreover, Ghouri was victorious in the total score for weeks 1 and 2 as well.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday 19th October at 6:25pm on BBC One.
