It feels like it was only recently when a man wearing a red thong, namely Channing Tatum, was causing quite the stir on our screens.
13 years have passed since I first fell in love with the captivating world of “Magic Mike,” masterfully crafted by none other than Steven Soderbergh. This story, brimming with oil-slicked charm, revolves around our enigmatic protagonist, Magic Mike, a charismatic stripper who yearns to establish his own venture. He takes a directionless college dropout under his wing, and together they navigate the allure and challenges of their unique profession.
Indeed, even the romantic storyline took a backseat to the visual appeal of the film, as moviegoers in 2012 were less interested in the custom furniture of the lead character (though if it were made today, Mike might just run an Etsy store). Instead, it was Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, and Kevin Nash who showcased their physiques for future cult-classic fame. They flipped the traditional male gaze trope on its head and turned it into a downpour, earning $168 million against a production budget of just $7 million.
Watching those men almost completely undress sparked a mixed bag of feelings for Cody Horn, who portrayed Pettyfer’s sister and Tatum’s love interest. In an interview with TopMob News back in 2012, she playfully commented that her character, Brooke, was initially repelled by her brother’s new profession but couldn’t help being captivated by Tatum’s talents. She confessed, “If I were up there, I would have been just as smitten, thinking, ‘Wow, check out this incredible man.’
The screaming ladies on hand to enjoy the “C–k-Rocking Kings of Tampa” had no such inhibitions.
According to Bomer’s account shared with TopMob, these dancers were not hesitant about pushing limits, venturing beyond established borders, and making physical contact in sensitive areas while we danced together.
Manganiello concurred, reminiscing during an interview, “The audience went crazy. At one point, they even took off McConaughey’s thong.” (Later, it seemed that Matthew McConaughey, the eventual Oscar winner, had to improvise a scene involving his chest.)
Due to high public interest, Magic Mike continued his story with a larger-than-life sequel titled XXL, followed by the concluding installment of the trilogy in 2023, Magic Mike’s Last Dance. Additionally, an HBO reality show was created, and the live, on-stage experience of Magic Mike Live was brought to life.
But you never forget your first dance.
In celebration of the original all-beef burger’s 13th anniversary, we’re giving you a sneak peek into its making process: the hidden facts!
The blockbuster hit “Magic Mike” was significantly influenced by Channing Tatum’s short-lived experience as a stripper prior to his acting debut. When he shared this intriguing aspect of his past with director Steven Soderbergh, who had previously collaborated with Tatum on the 2011 film “Haywire”, Soderbergh believed it could form the basis for an exceptional motion picture.
In a fun turn of events, I found myself seated alongside another, and we chose this moment to delve headfirst, as if it were nothing more than a casual chat over hot dogs – ironically, considering the heat of our meal, one might say it was a ‘hot’ discussion.
Screenwriter Reid Carolin explained that although the film is based on Channing Tatum’s life, it primarily serves as a starting point for the story, with most of its content being entirely fictitious.
It wasn’t a surprise to fans of the film ‘Step Up’ that Channing Tatum is an exceptionally talented dancer. However, some viewers might wonder if a stunt double was used for his acrobatic moves on stage. But contrary to this assumption, choreographer Alison Faulk confirmed in behind-the-scenes footage that every flip and twist was performed by Channing himself. She emphasized that there was no use of doubles whatsoever, stating clearly, “It’s him.
Matt Bomer was undeniably amazed. He remarked, “It’s hard to believe that someone as tall as him can move so gracefully, and with the rhythm he possesses, it’s truly puzzling.
Or as Joe Manganiello told TopMob News, “Channing Tatum is a dancer. We are dry-humpers.”
Beyond Tatum, the movie’s main cast members lacked any significant dancing background. Consequently, Faulk organized a three-week training program to instruct them in fundamental dance moves like body rolls and hip isolation, along with learning how to strip down seductively for added appeal. She then progressed to more advanced routines.
Alex Pettyfer, who portrays Adam, or “The Kid,” on stage, revealed to TopMob News in 2012 that his initial dance (to “Like a Virgin” fittingly) was not only his character’s first time dancing in front of an audience but also his own debut performance on stage. As he put it, “I had always been shielded by the camera.” He further explained that the responses he received were identical to those shown in the movie. He described the experience as incredibly nerve-wracking, adding, “It’s a massive adrenaline rush; it feels like a drug—that’s probably why performers continue to do it every day.
Exterior scenes of Xquisite, the Tampa club where the guys work, were actually filmed outside Wilson’s Bar in St. Petersburg, Florida. On the other hand, Platinum Live, a California nightclub that has since closed, was utilized for the indoor shots.
It was impossible for us not to get fully drawn away by Herman, the miniature pet pig that party-tongue-tied Nora, portrayed by Riley Keough, carried around.
As reported by Humane Hollywood, the standout pig in question was trained to follow hand signals and vocal commands. Additionally, secure areas for puppies were strategically positioned on the film set to ensure the pig’s safety and prevent him from coming into contact with any potentially dangerous items.
For their significant moment, when Mike and Brooke discover Herman cleaning up Adam’s vomit, it was actually a blend of rice cereal and piglet nourishment.
Although many stars praised the bonding experience from the free-spirited dancing and on-set thong-wearing, Pettyfer expressed that he did not sense a strong sense of camaraderie or brotherhood during filming.
In 2015, during an interview on Bret Easton Ellis’ B.E.E. podcast, Tatum admitted that he was initially hesitant about casting him in a project, as he perceived him as a risk, considering his past controversies surrounding film production and promotion.
Instead of hanging out with others, Pettyfer chose to focus on his work, listen to music in a quiet corner. He shared this, stating that representatives had made him feel like anything he did was wrong. This insecurity, coupled with their negative perceptions, led people to believe he thought he was superior when in reality, he was just anxious and scared to show his true self.
Hence rumors of a feud between Pettyfer and Tatum, which the latter has never addressed.
In an interview with Variety back in 2018, Pettyfer said, “I was never hard to work with. I was always punctual and memorized my lines. However, it might be the overall vibe you project that people perceive. Looking back, perhaps I didn’t fully grasp the importance of the role I was playing.
Bomer stated that he had no recollection whatsoever of any dispute between Tatum and Pettyfer, although he confessed that he might have been preoccupied with constantly managing to keep himself contained within his tight underwear during the filming process.
In my professional experience, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with some truly delightful individuals, but Channing is undeniably one of the most enjoyable. Back in 2017, during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live, he expressed this sentiment about working with someone. He established a fantastic atmosphere, and both he and his colleague always arrived punctually, delivered exceptional work, and I never detected any underlying tension between them.
At that moment, Bomer admitted he was a bit on edge concerning his attire, which might have distracted him from sensing those underlying currents.
Bomer significantly built up approximately 15 pounds of muscle for his role as the dancer Ken, and he also seemed to have let go of decades of emotional turmoil.
He joked in the studio interview, “Much like many people, I struggle with my body image.” Growing up in a traditional household, expressing or celebrating one’s body wasn’t common, making it unfamiliar territory for him. To portray it authentically, he knew he had to confront and explore uncomfortable areas, which is what artists sometimes need to do.
It was Matthew McConaughey who suggested that the character Dallas, being the club owner, should play the bongos, and interestingly enough, those were his personal bongos.
In simpler terms, the actor mentioned that he had a co-star, who was none other than Kevin Nash, a renowned WWF wrestler. This man portrayed Tarzan in the production. The actor explained this to the San Francisco Chronicle and added that the theme of this character’s entrance is the jungle. So, he wanted to use djembes to create a genuine jungle rhythm and call out his character. It’s an intriguing scene, but it may not be as famous as the time when he got arrested for playing congas in his birthday suit back in October 1999.
Can you believe it was my arrest for being naked while playing bongos that everyone’s still talking about? It’s almost surreal, especially since I was alone during that moment. But hey, when you’re in Dallas, you’ve got to give the crowd their entrances and exits, and I’m the host with all the sounds, lights, and music! Honestly, it wasn’t a joke I planned for myself, but rather something I thought Dallas would do. And then, just five steps later, I realized, ‘Wow, that incident actually makes this whole situation even funnier!’
2012 saw McConaughey delivering a captivating, all-encompassing performance that left his co-stars astounded. In an interview with TopMob News, Tatum expressed, “I didn’t believe anyone could surpass what we had scripted, but boy, were we mistaken. On the very first day, he was executing actions beyond our wildest expectations.
2000’s “Traffic,” for which Soderbergh won the Best Director Oscar (and was also nominated for “Erin Brockovich” in the same year), saw him returning to the independent filmmaking style reminiscent of his early work, such as “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.” The movie “Magic Mike,” with its dance sequences aside, has a relaxed, casual tone that resembles everyday conversations among ordinary men.
As a lifestyle expert speaking in 2022, I would say that when I talked to TopMob News in 2012, Tatum described Soderbergh’s method of documentary filmmaking as follows: he has a clear vision, and then he invites everyone to join the creative process and express themselves freely.
The actor clarified that they tend to chat continually on set. Suddenly, a camera is positioned somewhere, and they give a thumbs-up with approval, saying “Good job, carry on.” They proceed as they go along, making things up as they progress.
Thinking about the diet and exercise involved, Tatum almost didn’t agree to a third film.
He remarked on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in February 2022 that maintaining such a lean physique, even with regular exercise, is unnatural. He also pointed out that it’s not healthy and requires extreme dieting. He questioned how people who work traditional jobs manage to stay fit because maintaining this body type is his full-time job and he finds it difficult.
Moreover, he also expressed his concern, saying, “It’s frustrating, isn’t it? In about two months, one can achieve a lean physique, but in just three days, it can vanish. It’s as if it never existed. I was left wondering, ‘What gave?’
Without a doubt, I found myself utterly captivated by Channing Tatum’s electrifying performance in the 2023 release of “Magic Mike’s Last Dance.” It was evident that he still possessed an impressive repertoire of hip movements that left the audience yearning for more.
