Studio Ghibli Dominates New Top 10 Anime Movie Ranking With Surprise 4-Film Sweep

Founded in 1985, Studio Ghibli has created some of the most cherished characters and stories in anime film. Recent sales figures prove this, showing that Ghibli movies consistently rank among the best-selling home video titles – they actually swept the top spots on Geo’s official “Top 10 DVD/Blu-ray Rentals of 2025” chart.

Geo Corporation, which runs hundreds of used DVD, Blu-ray, and video game stores throughout Japan, recently released its annual list of best-selling titles. The rankings are based on sales data from over 900 Geo stores between January 1st and November 15th, 2025. Topping the list for 2024 is the comedy film Crayon Shin-Chan: Our Dinosaur Diary. Four other spots in the top ten are held by films from Studio Ghibli, all directed by . You can find the complete top 10 list below.

Studio Ghibli Scores a Major Win in New Top 10 Anime Movie Ranking

  1. Crayon Shin-chan: Our Dinosaur Diary (2024)
  2. Detective Conan the Movie: The Million Dollar Five-Star Mystery (2024)
  3. Spirited Away (2001)
  4. The Boy and the Heron (2023)
  5. My Neighbor Totoro (1988)
  6. Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem (2017)
  7. Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom (2024)
  8. Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales (2025)
  9. Doraemon: Nobita’s Earth Symphony (2024)
  10. Princess Mononoke (1997)

The strong sales figures show that Studio Ghibli films remain popular even years after their release. Aside from Despicable Me, they’re the only movies released before 2024 or 2025 that are still selling well. This is notable because newer films usually outsell older ones in the secondhand market, demonstrating Ghibli’s lasting appeal.

Critics often praise My Neighbor Totoro as a wonderful movie for families. Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron, however, are more thoughtful stories about growing up, intended for older children and teenagers. Spirited Away was a huge success, earning around 20.18 billion yen in Japan when it first came out.

I watched Princess Mononoke, and it’s a stunning film set in a dark, fantastical version of ancient Japan. The story centers around a young prince named Ashitaka, who’s cursed with a terrible illness stemming from deep-seated hatred. He sets out on a long journey hoping to break it, and eventually comes across Lady Eboshi, the strong-willed leader of a town that’s rapidly destroying the forest around them to gather resources. Before long, Ashitaka finds himself caught in the middle of a fierce battle – a conflict between Eboshi’s people, the powerful spirits of the forest, and a wild young woman known as Princess Mononoke, who was raised by wolves.

Studio Ghibli is widely popular in Western countries, even with people who don’t usually watch anime. Their latest movie, The Boy and the Heron, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2024. In the United States, GKIDS puts on a yearly event called ‘Ghibli Fest’ to celebrate and show some of Ghibli’s most beloved films.

This channel often shows beloved Studio Ghibli films like Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Spirited Away. Earlier this year, a special version was created just for IMAX screens. Both companies have announced that more Ghibli films will be restored in 4K and shown in U.S. theaters in 2026.

Where you are in the world determines where you can stream Studio Ghibli films – you’ll find them on either Max or Netflix.
