Studio Ghibli, the acclaimed animation studio known for beloved films like Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Spirited Away, was founded in 1985 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2025. Due to strong support from fans of both Ghibli and LEGO, an official LEGO set based on one of Ghibli’s classic movies is getting closer to being made.
Last year, a LEGO fan named “On the Brickside” shared their idea for a LEGO set celebrating Studio Ghibli’s 40th anniversary. The design beautifully captures the heartwarming scene from My Neighbor Totoro where young Satsuki meets Totoro at a bus stop while waiting for her dad to come home.
To recreate the iconic bus stop scene, the set features clear pieces designed to look like raindrops. Satsuki and Totoro also each have a large umbrella. As of January 15, 2026, the ‘On the Brickside’ concept has gained over 10,000 supporters on the LEGO Ideas website. This means LEGO will now review the design to see if it can become an official LEGO set.
New Studio Ghibli LEGO Prototype Stars Totoro for the Perfect Anniversary Collection
If approved, this LEGO set will be the first official partnership between Studio Ghibli and LEGO. The set features around 1,600 pieces and includes mini-figures of Satsuki and Mei, as well as the blocks needed to build Totoro. It also includes trees, plants, and even raindrops to recreate the magical forest setting of the film. Designed to be displayed, the set comes with a special base that has “My Neighbor Totoro” engraved on it.
Totoro, the beloved mascot of Studio Ghibli, is a fitting choice to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary. Created by Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, Totoro gained international fame after the release of My Neighbor Totoro. The film tells the story of sisters Satsuki and Mei, who move to the countryside while their mother recovers from an illness. There, they befriend the magical spirits living in the nearby forest, and develop a particularly close relationship with a large, gentle forest guardian they name Totoro.
On the Brickside’s latest creation is quickly approaching 10,000 supporters, and this success comes at a perfect time for LEGO, as the company is already exploring potential partnerships based on anime. Their current project celebrates classic Pokémon like Pikachu, Eevee, Charizard, Venusaur, and Blastoise.
Anime-inspired LEGO sets are becoming increasingly popular, showing a strong demand from fans. While LEGO’s Pokémon sets can currently only be pre-ordered, they are expected to be officially released on February 27, 2026.
You can watch My Neighbor Totoro on Max or Netflix, depending on where you are located.
