Hayao Miyazaki is a world-renowned anime director and a major figure in Japanese animation. He made history as the first anime director to win an Academy Award, and his films continue to be classics. As a co-founder of Studio Ghibli, established in 1985 with Toshio Suzuki and Isao Takahata, Miyazaki has been central to the studio’s success. Studio Ghibli is celebrated for its beautiful, hand-drawn animation, captivating stories, and emotionally resonant films. The studio is particularly known for its detailed artwork, vibrant settings, smooth animation, and expressive characters, all contributing to truly stunning visuals.
On March 17, 2026, Studio Ghibli executives Toshio Suzuki and Goro Miyazaki gave a first look at a new project celebrating Hayao Miyazaki’s work. Called “The Panorama Box,” it will include fresh illustrations from his most famous films and be shown at Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse starting July 8, 2026. This display is part of the larger exhibition at the Studio Ghibli theme park in Nagakute, Japan. During the announcement, Suzuki also provided an update on Miyazaki’s health and progress on his current film.
Hayao Miyazaki Continues Working Despite His Struggles

As reported by Mantan Web, Suzuki mentioned during a press conference that Hayao Miyazaki, who turned 85 in January, is remarkably energetic and doesn’t seem to be slowing down with age.
Miyazaki’s son, Goro Miyazaki, added, “His blood test results are better than mine.”
Suzuki explained that the filmmaker still feels driven and wants to continue working, even at 85. However, his energy levels fluctuate. Some days he’s enthusiastic about making movies, but when he’s not feeling well, he loses motivation and expresses doubts about continuing. It’s a pattern that comes and goes.
Hayao Miyazaki has said he was retiring multiple times throughout his career, but he always returns to create new projects. Known for his incredible dedication, fans eagerly anticipate each of his films. Though his 2023 film, The Boy and the Heron, was presented as his final work, Miyazaki quickly announced he would continue making movies. While the studio hasn’t released details about his next film, producer Toshio Suzuki has confirmed that Miyazaki has been working steadily since The Boy and the Heron’s release.
Despite turning 85 this year, Hayao Miyazaki remains incredibly active and passionate about his work. He does experience periods of low energy and motivation, but quickly regains his drive. He began 2026 by releasing a new image hinting at his next film, which is currently shrouded in mystery. His latest project, Panorama Box, is a beautiful collection of illustrations created specifically for a recent exhibition.
