Studio Ghibli Returns With a Special New Anime in July

Founded in 1985, Studio Ghibli continues to be the most celebrated anime film studio. Each of their movies is known for beautiful artwork, compelling stories, and powerful emotional resonance. The studio is famous for its detailed, hand-drawn animation – from vibrant landscapes to lifelike characters. Although there aren’t any new movie releases this year, Ghibli Park in Aichi Prefecture, which opened in late 2022, is still delighting fans with ongoing projects. In March, legendary director Hayao Miyazaki even returned with new illustrations of his classic films for a special Panorama Box.

This special box creates a 3D effect with the scenes designed by the director and will be showcased at the Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse starting July 8th, 2026. Along with a new project from Miyazaki, the studio has shared a preview of their partnership with TOHO Cinemas. They’ve also announced a short animated film to promote the park, which will be released as July nears.

Studio Ghibli Announces a Short Anime Film For The Ghibli Park

Starting July 8th, the anime short film Night in the Valley of Witches will be shown at the Orion theater inside Ghibli Grand Warehouse at Ghibli Park. The film is directed by Goro Miyazaki and Akihiko Yamashita, two well-known animators from Studio Ghibli. Ghibli Park’s website has more information about the film and a first look at its characters. The story takes place in the Valley of Witches area of Ghibli Park, but plot details are still forthcoming.

The new promotional film will be screened in theaters with a special appearance by Goro Miyazaki and Akihiko Yamashita. The theater seats 150 people, and admission is first-come, first-served. You can register starting May 10th at 2:00 PM through Boo-Woo Ticket, but currently, the film will only be shown at the Orion theater.

What to Expect From Studio Ghibli in 2026

Hayao Miyazaki is currently working on a new movie, but Studio Ghibli hasn’t revealed any information about it yet. Miyazaki had planned to retire after his 2023 film, The Boy and the Heron, but he’s continuing to work despite being older and facing health issues. Besides a short film, the studio hasn’t announced any other anime releases for 2026. As always, fans in North America can enjoy the yearly Studio Ghibli Fest, running from July to October.

Building on the successful IMAX release of Princess Mononoke last March, IMAX and GKIDS are partnering to bring more Studio Ghibli films to IMAX screens. These versions will be specially created from new 4K restorations and supervised by Atsushi Okui, a long-time Ghibli animator and cinematographer who has worked on beloved films like Howl’s Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron, among others.
