Since 1985, Studio Ghibli has been Japan’s most beloved animation studio. Each of their films is known for beautiful hand-drawn animation, compelling stories, and deeply moving themes. They’re famous for detailed landscapes, smooth motion, and characters that truly come to life, creating visually stunning experiences. Hayao Miyazaki, a co-founder and celebrated director, played a key role in building the studio’s reputation with iconic films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle, among many others.
Despite being 85 years old, Hayao Miyazaki is still making films and has no plans to retire. Studio Ghibli started the year by releasing a beautiful visual from Miyazaki for fans around the globe. 2026 promises to be exciting for Ghibli enthusiasts, with both re-releases of classic films and a brand new project from Hayao Miyazaki in the works. According to a report from Oricon, Studio Ghibli President Toshio Suzuki and director Goro Miyazaki recently gave a first glimpse of Miyazaki’s latest creation.
Hayao Miyazaki’s Panorama Box Has Been Unveiled

The director is currently involved in several films, but this new project is separate from those. On March 17, 2026, at Studio Ghibli’s headquarters in Koganei, Tokyo, Suzuki and Goro Miyazaki revealed an early look at Miyazaki’s 3D Panorama Box. This box includes new illustrations of the director’s classic films, such as Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and others.
This special box creates a three-dimensional effect in the artwork, making the scenes feel more realistic. It was originally designed with children in mind, and they especially enjoyed its unique look. The box is a sneak peek at an exhibit that will be featured at the official Studio Ghibli theme park in Nagakute, Japan. You’ll be able to see the Panorama Box at Ghibli’s Grand Warehouse starting on July 8th, 2026.
What to Expect From Studio Ghibli in 2026

Hayao Miyazaki is currently working on a new movie, but Studio Ghibli hasn’t revealed any information about it yet. Miyazaki had planned to retire after his 2023 film, The Boy and the Heron, but he’s continuing to work despite being older. While the studio hasn’t officially announced any new projects, fans in North America can still enjoy the yearly Studio Ghibli Fest. Plus, the official IMAX website has announced exciting news for December 2025.
Building on the positive response to the IMAX showing of Princess Mononoke, IMAX and GKIDS will team up to release more Studio Ghibli films in the IMAX format. These versions will be created using new 4K restorations and carefully supervised by Atsushi Okui, a long-time Ghibli animator and cinematographer who has worked on beloved films like Howl’s Moving Castle and The Boy and the Heron, among others.
