Subnautica 2 Early Access Delayed to 2026, First Gameplay Revealed

After the unexpected change in leadership at Unknown Worlds, which they described as “shocking,” the studio has decided to push back the release of Subnautica 2 from its initial early access schedule. The game is now set to launch in 2026, and they have released a gameplay teaser to give fans a glimpse of the advancements made so far.

The reason for the delay, as explained by Unknown Worlds, is because they received valuable feedback from secret playtests. The community was enthusiastic about the game’s environment, creatures, and story, and felt optimistic about the overall direction of the game. This feedback suggested that we are heading in the right direction with the project.

Nevertheless, it provided understanding about the aspects requiring refinement. Given the significance of the community in our development process, Unknown Worlds decided to take a bit more time to address more feedback and make necessary improvements before launching the game into Early Access.

The playtests will carry on, but Unknown Worlds have reiterated, which seems concerning given recent patterns, that no alterations are planned regarding the game’s direction or development team. In essence, they remain positive about their creation and simply aim to offer additional content for the initial Early Access launch.

The upcoming content will feature additional creatures, enhanced vehicles, diverse biomes, and new tools. Additionally, the storyline will be expanded further. The next Developer’s Log is coming “slightly later than planned,” but it will offer more insights and demonstrations closer to the early access release date, along with a few exciting extras.

The sequel to Subnautica, titled “Subnautica 2,” is currently being developed for both Xbox Series X/S and personal computers, and it will be available on the first day of launch through Game Pass as well.
