Great news for fans of the underwater adventure game Subnautica! The sequel, Subnautica 2, will be available in Early Access in May 2026. Developer Unknown Worlds Entertainment and publisher Krafton have just announced this exciting step forward, and the community is thrilled!

After a long wait and several setbacks, Subnautica 2 is scheduled to launch in Early Access on PC and Xbox Series X|S in May 2026. Although the specific date isn’t set, both the game developers, Unknown Worlds, and gaming news sources have confirmed that May is when players will be able to start exploring this work-in-progress version of the game.

We’re excited to launch Early Access, giving players a first chance to explore our new underwater worlds and try out unique survival features. This is also a chance for the community to help shape the game as we finish development and prepare for the full launch.

What Early Access Entails

When Subnautica 2 launches in Early Access, it won’t be a complete game. However, it will be playable, and the developers will constantly improve it based on what players think. The official Steam page explains that this lets players help shape the game as new features, content, and improvements are added over time.

Here’s what players can expect initially:

  • Explore alien underwater worlds and try to survive! You’ll need to carefully manage your oxygen and resources while facing dangerous new creatures.

  • Multiplayer Co-op: For the first time in the series, up to four players can explore together.

  • Explore fresh environments and encounter unique creatures, greatly expanding the game world beyond what you’ve seen before.

  • We’ll be regularly updating the game throughout Early Access, adding more story, features, and things to explore as development continues.

Development Background

The development of Subnautica 2 hasn’t been smooth sailing. It was initially expected to enter Early Access in 2025, but changes in the game’s leadership and legal issues with its publisher, Krafton, caused delays. Thankfully, recent improvements have put the project back on track and closer to release.

We haven’t officially announced a PlayStation version for Early Access yet. But we might explore bringing the game to other platforms later on.

The underwater world is so immersive, and the atmosphere is genuinely creepy, plus the crafting is really deep. Everyone’s been waiting for a proper sequel to build on all that, and it’s finally happening! We’re getting an Early Access version in May 2026, which means we’ll be the first to jump in and see what’s next for the series.
