The creators of Subnautica, Unknown Worlds, have shared a new development video detailing how players will build bases in the upcoming game, Subnautica 2. The four-minute video features base design lead Kiel McDonald and other team members, including gameplay engineer Milan Singh, engineer Carolyn Lu, and artist Ben Henry, giving a look behind the scenes at the base-building and customization features.
According to McDonald, the biggest hurdle they faced was building the game’s core system. It’s a completely new design, unlike anything they’ve encountered in other survival games.
In Subnautica 2, players will build bases using individual tiles that connect seamlessly, giving them a lot of creative freedom and avoiding issues with uneven terrain. The developers call this new building system complex, relying on many rules and logical connections. Unlike the pre-built pieces in previous Subnautica games, this system is designed to be more flexible and allow for more artistic and custom base designs.
I’m so excited about the changes coming to Subnautica 2! Apparently, the window system is getting a huge overhaul. It sounds like we won’t be stuck with pre-made shapes anymore – we’ll be able to design windows however we want! And that’s not all – the corridors are getting a similar treatment with all these new customization options. It’s going to be amazing to build exactly the base I’ve always dreamed of.
We’re planning to add even more ways to personalize the game, like new colors and decorations. Plus, we’ll be introducing fully round rooms, similar to those found in the original Subnautica.
Singh shared his enthusiasm, saying, “We’re eager to see what players create with the new tools we’ve developed. You’ve already shown incredible creativity in the first two games, and the whole team is excited to see what you come up with now. We see this as a true partnership between the developers and the players.”
The latest developer update for Subnautica 2, released in February, highlighted the game’s multiplayer features and how players on different platforms will be able to play together. Unknown Worlds has confirmed that while Subnautica 2 will still offer a single-player experience for those who prefer it, players will also have the option to jump into cooperative gameplay with friends.
The studio also shared that they’re working to make Subnautica 2 run smoothly on many different computers. They’re particularly excited about optimizing the game for the Steam Deck.
The highly anticipated game, Subnautica 2, is scheduled to launch later this year on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Although a PlayStation 5 version hasn’t been announced, the developers have confirmed it will be available on Xbox Game Pass starting on its release day.
