The summer movie season of 2026 is off to a strong start, with several films already proving popular with audiences. Early in the year, Wuthering Heights was a Valentine’s Day success, grossing over $241.7 million globally. Scream 7 also performed well, earning around $207.6 million worldwide and becoming the highest-earning film in the Scream series. Plus, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is also proving to be a hit with moviegoers.
Pixar’s Hoppers performed well in March, earning about $371.4 million globally. Another March release, Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, has become the third highest-grossing film of the year with over $639.1 million worldwide. But the biggest blockbuster of 2026 so far is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This animated sequel has already earned around $888.3 million and is expected to surpass $1 billion soon.
While several promising films are slated for release later in 2026, including Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part 3 in December, summer typically delivers the biggest box office results thanks to a wave of blockbuster movies. Last year, 2025, saw strong summer performance with hits like the live-action Lilo & Stitch, which earned over $1 billion globally, and Superman, which brought in over $618.7 million worldwide.
As a movie fan, I’m already getting excited about the summer of 2026! It looks like we’ll have a ton of sequels, movies based on books, and, of course, superhero flicks – all with the potential to be huge at the box office. And honestly, things are already looking good. The summer kicked off strong with both The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the Michael Jackson biopic, Michael, getting people back into theaters that very first weekend.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 And Michael Have Started The 2026 Summer Box Office On A High Note
Although summer officially begins in June, the first weekend of May usually kicks off the summer movie season. Big films have traditionally been released then, such as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Thunderbolts. In 2026, The Devil Wears Prada 2 premiered in theaters that weekend and was a huge success, earning $77 million in the US and over $233 million globally during its opening weekend.
I’m so excited about how well Michael is doing! After a huge opening weekend where it made $97 million here and $217 million globally, it earned another $54 million domestically this past weekend, putting it in second place behind Prada 2. Overall, the movie has already brought in over $432.7 million worldwide! It’s great to see both Prada 2 and Michael doing so well – it feels like a really positive start to the summer movie season, and there are so many other potential blockbusters coming up!
Summer 2026 Has More Films With Strong Box Office Potential
While The Devil Wears Prada 2 is currently the biggest movie of the summer, it’s unlikely to stay that way for long. Several other films are expected to be major successes this summer, including Mortal Kombat II and The Mandalorian and Grogu in May. Mortal Kombat II is based on the popular video game series, and The Mandalorian and Grogu is the next installment in the hit Disney+ show, marking the first Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.
June and July are packed with highly anticipated movie releases. In June, audiences can look forward to films like Masters of the Universe, Disclosure Day, Toy Story 5, and Supergirl. Toy Story 5 is predicted to be the biggest success, following the billion-dollar performance of the previous two installments. July promises even bigger potential blockbusters, including Minions & Monsters, Moana, The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Each of these films has the potential to earn over $1 billion, thanks to established franchises and acclaimed filmmakers.
Several movies are expected to do well this summer, including Scary Movie, Jackass: Best and Last, Evil Dead Burn, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie, and Insidious: Out of the Further. It’s also encouraging to see films like The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Michael already proving popular with audiences.
