Our editor frequently recalls his time in the military, especially his last tour where he is said to have killed more than one hundred enemy soldiers. However, it’s important to note that his gaming prowess in Call of Duty on the xbox doesn’t quite match up. But what does resonate is ‘Sunray : Fallen Soldier‘, a film co-written and directed by James Clarke & Daniel Shepherd, featuring Rip Cullen, Tom Leigh, Luke Solomon, Steven Blades. All of them are former British Royal Marines, lending an air of authenticity to the production.
In my civilian life now, I’m Cullen, who’s spent decades serving in the military. I’ve taken up a job at The Toolshed, a hardware store, but it feels like another world compared to what I was accustomed to. My struggles are compounded by the loss of my daughter, who tragically passed away due to drug overdose. Seeking justice for her, I reach out to three old comrades from my military days: Smudger (Tom Leigh), Sledge (Luke Solomon), and Harper, a fellow soldier with a resemblance to boxer Tony Bellew. With their help, we delve deeper into the dark layers of a criminal network as we pursue those responsible for my daughter’s death.
Given their backgrounds, it’s no surprise that the four team members convincingly portray various action scenes, making it apparent why some actors who prepare for on-screen military roles by attending boot camp don’t quite capture the same authenticity. You genuinely feel that these four men were once in the military, and their dialogue and camaraderie seem genuine. Moreover, the execution of action sequences is impressive – the opening scene immerses you into the action, and a scene filmed in one take within a quarry is equally noteworthy.
Although the action in the movie “Sunray Fallen Soldier” is compelling, the script requires significant improvement, particularly in its structure and plot development, which can be quite confusing during the first act. The storytelling often jumps back and forth in time, weakening the overall narrative flow. Additionally, there are occasional plot inconsistencies and a surprising ending that might leave viewers feeling unsettled. Despite these issues, the film exceeds expectations given its crowd-funded origin, and audiences will likely be eager for more of this four-member squad.
