The second installment of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is scheduled for release next year, but specifics about the film are currently scarce. The initial movie grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, with much of its success coming from its appeal to both newcomers and longtime enthusiasts of Nintendo’s games. Predictably, the sequel aims to cater to both demographics. Interestingly, during a Q&A session at Nintendo’s recent Shareholders Meeting, producer Chris Meledandri mentioned that the focus this time will be on satisfying the most devoted fans.
Meledandri shared that our team is deeply engaged in making the upcoming movie, collaborating closely with Nintendo’s team. He expressed his wish for the film to captivate long-time fans of Mario and the Nintendo universe initially, but also aims to attract new viewers who are yet to discover this exciting world.
On previous occasions, it’s been mentioned that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 aims to captivate devoted gamers. In an interview with Men’s Journal last autumn, Toad actor Keegan-Michael Key hinted at the sequel featuring some “very specific references” in terms of new characters. As of now, we’re unsure who these specific characters will be, but the Mario series boasts a rich history of characters dating back four decades. There are numerous characters that the sequel could introduce, which were absent in the first film, and this would certainly attract the “devoted fans.
The follow-up to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is scheduled for release on April 3rd, 2026. Although that date seems far off, excitement should start building up as we get closer. During a Nintendo Direct, the cast for the initial film was unveiled. There’s a chance that the sequel might announce some of its actors in an upcoming live broadcast from the company. It’s expected that many of the original cast members will reprise their roles in the sequel, but there’s uncertainty about whether Spike, played by Sebastian Maniscalco, will return.
Fans of Nintendo eagerly anticipate if a fresh Mario game will synchronize with the upcoming movie in the coming year. The highly anticipated Super Mario Bros. Wonder, launched as one of the major games for Nintendo Switch in 2023, followed closely on the heels of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which hit theaters just months prior. Given the significant sales boost Mario games experienced after the first movie’s premiere, it’s likely that Nintendo will release another Mario game for 2026, potentially for the Nintendo Switch 2. At this point, however, the company hasn’t disclosed many details about its plans for next year. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait much longer for some fresh updates.
