Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s Massive Opening Helps 2026 Box Office Hit Major Milestone

Despite several huge box office hits since the COVID-19 pandemic began, the way people watch movies has changed a lot. With the growth of streaming and shorter times between a movie’s theater release and its availability at home, it became easier to wait and watch films later. This was great for viewers, but challenging for movie theaters, which rely on ticket sales. While big names like Marvel and Pixar faced difficulties recently, there’s now reason to be more optimistic about the future of movie theaters.

As reported by Deadline, domestic movie theaters have already earned over $2 billion this year, a jump of about 30% compared to the same period last year. The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a major factor, bringing in $190 million in its first five days. Continued success from Avatar: The Seed Bearer and the strong performance of Project Hail Mary also helped reach this impressive total.

Can The 2026 Box Office Renaissance Continue?

2026 started strong for movie ticket sales, and now the big question is whether that success will continue. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to keep numbers high throughout April. Despite mixed reviews, the film has become popular with fans thanks to its many Nintendo nods and lively pace. It’s likely to remain the top movie for the next few weeks, as there aren’t any other big animated films aimed at kids coming out soon. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie currently has the market cornered for that audience, and Hoppers, which came out a month ago, has already seen most of its peak performance.

In 2023, The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $574.9 million domestically, and Super Mario Galaxy is on track to achieve a similar, or even higher, total, making it the highest-grossing film of the year so far. Looking ahead to 2026, things are also promising for theaters. Several highly anticipated movies are slated for release during the summer, including the first new Star Wars film in seven years, The Mandalorian and Grogu, as well as Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters, Moana, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. These films are all expected to be box office successes, further boosting overall domestic earnings.

This summer will also bring new films from acclaimed directors Steven Spielberg (with Disclosure Day) and Christopher Nolan (The Odyssey). The recent success of Project Hail Mary is a good sign for both of their movies. All three films are large-scale, creative projects meant to be experienced in theaters. Project Hail Mary proved that original, big-budget films can still attract a large audience. These kinds of movies are riskier now because they don’t rely on established franchises to bring people in, but after Sinners became a huge hit last year, we might be seeing a new trend: audiences embracing blockbuster films directed by visionary filmmakers.

December promises a huge battle at the box office with the release of both Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three on the same weekend. The holidays are typically a busy time for movie theaters, and these two films are expected to bring in a lot of revenue, finishing 2026 strong. While it will be very challenging to reach pre-pandemic box office numbers—in 2019, nine films each earned over $1 billion—theater owners are likely to have a very successful year.
