Good news for Super Smash Bros. fans! It’s been seven years since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate came out on Nintendo Switch, which is the longest wait between games in the series so far. While a new installment hasn’t been announced, it looks like the wait might not be as long as we thought.
As a big Smash Bros. fan, I’ve been wondering why it’s taking so long to get the next game. Apparently, Masahiro Sakurai and his team at Sora have been busy with a new Kirby game called Kirby Air Riders, which is coming out on the new Nintendo Switch 2 in November. Everyone’s expecting them to go back to working on Super Smash Bros. after that, though Nintendo hasn’t officially said so. It seems like a pretty safe assumption, though, and honestly, I’m okay with waiting if it means they can make the next Smash Bros. amazing!
New Update From Sora and Nintendo
Before the launch of Kirby Air Riders, the developers, Sora and Nintendo, have announced that the game won’t receive any ongoing updates or downloadable content. This allows the team to focus their efforts on their next project more quickly. If that next project turns out to be a new Super Smash Bros. game, it means fans might get it sooner. Adding extra content to Kirby Air Riders could have delayed the studio’s next game by months or even years. While this might disappoint those looking forward to more Kirby Air Riders content, it’s good news for Super Smash Bros. fans.
Super Smash Bros. Release Date
So, what can we guess about when the next Super Smash Bros. game might come out? Considering it took three years to develop Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from the start of planning to its release, a holiday 2028 launch seems like a reasonable estimate for the next installment.
It’s concerning that Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Super Smash Bros., has previously admitted he wasn’t sure how to continue the series after Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It’s hard to top a game that includes every character from past installments, plus new additions – that level of content isn’t sustainable long-term. Because of this, many fans believe the next Super Smash Bros. game might be a reboot, but so far, these are just speculations.
