This lengthy interval mirrors the seven-year gap that occurred between Super Smash Bros. Melee (launched in 2001) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (released in 2008). Unfortunately, with no indications of a new Super Smash Bros. game forthcoming, it appears this record for longest gap between releases will be surpassed, as fans are now accepting that this situation is unlikely to change in the near future.
The reason for no immediate change is that the creator and director of the series, Masahiro Sakurai, along with his team, are currently engrossed in a project titled Kirby Air Riders. This endeavor serves as a passion project for Sakurai and offers him a chance to step away from Super Smash Bros. The Nintendo Switch 2 game, Kirby Air Riders, is expected to launch this year, after which work on the next Super Smash Bros. game may likely commence.
Combine this with Sakurai’s extensively recorded exhaustion and his many doubts about where the franchise might head beyond Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – who could potentially carry on the mantle from him – and the future isn’t particularly bright for supporters of the 26-year-old Nintendo franchise.
Sakurai is tired and unsure about what’s next for Super Smash Bros. after Ultimate, which leaves us wondering who will continue the series. The outlook isn’t too promising for fans of this long-running Nintendo game.

To put it simply, we fans are getting ready to wait it out, much like bears hibernate during winter. However, knowing that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate had approximately one year of pre-production and two years of full development, a 2027 release might be possible if they’ve already started pre-production. Yet, given the current context, it appears that a 2027 release may be a stretch at this point in time.
