Supergirl Director Breaks Down Kara Zor-El & Superman’s ‘Older-Sibling Dynamic’

Ahead of the release of the new Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock, director Craig Gillespie has discussed the relationship between Supergirl and David Corenswet’s Superman. Gillespie, who is directing the second film in James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe, described their connection as an “older-sibling dynamic” and explained what drives each character.

I’m so excited for the new Supergirl movie! The director of ‘I, Tonya’ has confirmed that Superman – Kal-El – will be featured as a kind of older brother to Kara, which I think is a really cool dynamic and will add a lot to the story.

Despite being cousins, their relationship feels more like an older sibling pairing, which can sometimes lead to conflict. He’s the calm, understanding one who tries to connect with her, while she’s on a journey to figure things out and discover who she is.

Gillespie pointed out the significant difference between Superman and Supergirl’s personalities, which he attributes to how they grew up. He explained that Superman had a stable and loving childhood, essentially preparing him for his role as a hero. Supergirl, however, experienced trauma and is adapting to her heroic role later in life, finding it more challenging to adjust.

Unlike Superman, who arrived on Earth as a baby, Supergirl – also known as Kara Zor-El – grew up on Krypton. Before the planet was destroyed, her parents, Zor-El and Alura, sent her to live with her cousin on Earth, but sadly didn’t survive the planet’s destruction themselves.

Craig Gillespie shared a sneak peek at the scene where Supergirl first arrives on Earth. He explained that it was one of the very first things they filmed, and that Supergirl initially speaks Kryptonian because she hasn’t learned English yet.

Meanwhile, Supergirl will arrive in theaters on June 26, 2026.
