Supergirl Gives Kara a Major Costume Shift (But It Makes Perfect Sense)

When you think of a superhero, it’s easy to focus on their powers or how they became who they are. But actually, their costume is incredibly important – it’s what instantly identifies them. And when it comes to iconic superhero costumes, those worn by DC’s Kryptonian heroes, like Superman and Supergirl, are hard to beat. The classic blue and red suit, featuring the House of El symbol, is instantly recognizable. However, when the Supergirl movie comes out soon, fans will notice a slight change to her costume, and there’s a good reason for it.

During a visit to the set of the Supergirl movie last year, we found out that while the film will largely follow the story of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, there will be one key difference. Instead of seeing Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in her classic Supergirl suit for most of the movie, she’ll spend a lot of time wearing everyday clothes – like the jeans and t-shirt seen in the trailers. Executive producer Chantal Nong Vo explained this is intentional; Kara isn’t actively working as Supergirl when she’s off Earth.

As a movie fan, I found it really interesting what one of the creators, Nong Vo, shared about Supergirl. Apparently, when we first meet her in the movie, she’s already stepped back from her official duties, so being Supergirl is her everyday life on Earth. That’s why traveling to other planets is her chance to actually relax and have downtime! They really wanted to show her enjoying a break from being a hero, and thought it would be more fun to see her just being herself, blending in and not in costume.

Kara’s Costume Shift Has Deeper Emotional Meaning As Well

As a huge Supergirl fan, I always thought it made sense that Kara wouldn’t wear her super suit all the time when she’s off-world. Being Supergirl is such a big part of who she is on Earth, it’s natural she’d want something more relaxed when she’s trying to have a life outside of being a hero. But it turns out there’s a deeper reason we’ll be seeing less of the iconic red and blue in the new movie! If you’ve read the Supergirl comic by King and Evely, you know Kara’s had a really tough life. Unlike her cousin who was just a baby when Krypton exploded, Kara actually remembers her home and everything she lost. That symbol on her suit means something very personal to her, and this movie isn’t just about her fighting for justice, it’s about her learning to accept who she is and come to terms with her past.

Nong Vo explained that the character has already demonstrated heroism, but hasn’t yet fully embraced her true self. The movie, she says, is about learning to accept who you are, coming to terms with your past, and ultimately becoming whole. The superhero suit, in particular, represents this complete self-acceptance.
