James Gunn and director Craig Gillespie have shared details about the new Supergirl movie, describing it as the first film in the DC Universe to feature a character who isn’t a traditional hero, but rather an ‘anti-hero’.
What did James Gunn and Craig Gillespie say about Supergirl?
In a recent Variety interview, director Gillespie shared that the new movie will focus on Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock) as an “anti-hero,” delving into her personal struggles and contrasting her journey with that of Superman, the only other Kryptonian we know.
Gillespie described the story as focusing on a flawed protagonist, someone burdened by past trauma and inner struggles, a contrast to the typically upright and optimistic Superman.
Gunn pointed out that this film will give its female superhero the freedom to be flawed, something male heroes have been able to do for a while now.
James Gunn pointed out that female superheroes are often portrayed as flawless characters. He wanted to create a different kind of hero – one with flaws, something male superheroes have been able to do for some time now.
The upcoming film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, is inspired by the comic book series of the same name by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. Milly Alcock will star as Supergirl (Kara Zor-El), and the script is written by Ana Nogueira. The film is being produced by DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran.
In 2023, director James Gunn explained the upcoming project will highlight the contrasting upbringings of Superman and Supergirl. Superman was raised on Earth by caring parents from infancy, while Supergirl spent her first fourteen years on a fragment of Krypton, witnessing tragedy all around her before arriving on Earth as a child. Gunn noted that this difficult past makes her a much tougher and different version of Supergirl than audiences are familiar with.
The upcoming Supergirl movie, titled ‘Woman of Tomorrow,’ is inspired by the comic book series of the same name by Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. Craig Gillespie is directing the film, which is scheduled to be released on June 26, 2026.
