Supergirl: James Gunn on if Fans Should Be Scared of What Happens to Krypto

James Gunn’s recent comments about Supergirl could mean bad news for Krypto fans.

After Superman’s debut, the next DC Universe movie to hit theaters will be Supergirl, set for release in June 2026. This film is a production of Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios, directed by Craig Gillespie and Ana Nogueira.

The movie draws inspiration from the Tom King and Bilquis Evely Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow miniseries published by DC Comics in 2021. In the debut issue, Krypto, Supergirl (Kara), and Ruthye Marye Knoll find themselves under attack by Krem of the Yellow Hills, leading to Krypto sustaining severe injuries.

What did James Gunn say about Supergirl and Krypto?

In an interview during the promotional events for Superman, actors María Gabriela de Faría and Sara Sampaio revealed that a sequence featuring Ultraman striking Krypto had been deleted from the film following poor feedback during test viewings.

In an interview with RollingStone, when asked if the Supergirl movie would incorporate scenes featuring Krypto from the comics or if it was unlikely due to being too dark or scary for a DCU film, Gunn replied, “Keep in mind, this isn’t the same movie as Supergirl. Supergirl is more of a rock & roll film – it’s rougher around the edges and features a tougher character who isn’t like Superman at all. This film is meant for everyone, but while Supergirl is also suitable for all ages, it has a slightly edgier feel compared to this movie. I’ve seen the daily footage, but I haven’t seen the final cut yet, which I’ll see next week.

Milly Alcock portrays Kara Zor-El, Matthias Schoenaerts takes on the role of Krem from the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley is cast as Ruth Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz plays Zor-El, Emily Beecham acts as Alura In-Ze, and Jason Momoa appears as Lobo in Supergirl.

This version maintains the same information but presents it with a slight change of wording to make it more conversational and easy to read.

Supergirl hits United States theaters on June 26, 2026.
