Supergirl Looks Exactly Like One Of The Best Modern Sci-Fi Movies (& That’s A Problem)

The first trailer for the new Supergirl movie from DC Studios is out, and people are already sharing their reactions. Early discussions focus on how closely the film seems to follow the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic book, the appearance of Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Jason Momoa’s take on Lobo, and hints about the possible appearance of Brainiac.

The first trailer for Supergirl gives us a decent look at the movie, and it’s hard not to compare it to other films. For me, it strongly reminds me of a particularly well-regarded superhero and science fiction movie from the 2010s.

It’s common for movies to draw inspiration from each other, whether filmmakers are paying homage to favorites or studios are trying to replicate successful films. While Supergirl was naturally expected to be compared to other sci-fi adventures, the particular movie it seems to have borrowed from the most is raising some concerns.

Supergirl Has Major Guardians Of The Galaxy Vibes

Although Supergirl seems like it will be enjoyable, I was surprised by how much it reminded me of Guardians of the Galaxy. It turns out I wasn’t the only one who noticed the similarities between the two superhero films.

The similarities are striking, even including direct copies – for example, the character Supergirl is heavily inspired by Star-Lord, right down to wearing orange Walkman headphones, a key part of Star-Lord’s look. Everything from their appearance to their somewhat rebellious attitude as space heroes feels very similar.

The song used in the Supergirl trailer immediately brings Guardians of the Galaxy to mind. While trailers have featured songs before, Supergirl prominently uses music – and the hint of a Walkman – suggesting the film will, like Guardians, heavily feature a curated soundtrack, similar to how the Marvel movie used Awesome Mix Vol. 1.

Some of the locations in the show strongly resemble those from Guardians of the Galaxy. The planet where Supergirl meets bounty hunters looks so much like Knowhere that you might think they’re connected, despite being from different universes.

The show Supergirl feels a lot like Guardians of the Galaxy because of its blend of music, funny moments, relatable characters with imperfections, and unique look. It’s understandable why DC would borrow some ideas from that successful Marvel movie.

Many science fiction and superhero movies have attempted to replicate the successful formula of Guardians of the Galaxy. This was especially noticeable with adaptations of popular games, like Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Lionsgate’s Borderlands. Even DC Studios tried this approach, significantly reworking Suicide Squad with reshoots to make it more similar to Guardians.

Given its success, it’s understandable that Supergirl would draw inspiration from the adventurous and humorous style of Guardians of the Galaxy. It wasn’t a bad approach in itself, but the show’s noticeable similarities feel less original because of its ties to the Guardians of the Galaxy universe.

Supergirl’s GOTG Similarities Look Worse For DC Studios

The biggest issue with the Supergirl movie is the noticeable influence of James Gunn, who previously directed the Guardians films. Despite being presented as the first film to launch a new DC Universe separate from his vision, his creative stamp is all over it.

James Gunn shaped the initial three DC Universe projects – Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and Superman. When it came time for Supergirl, a new creative team took over. Ana Nogueira wrote the screenplay, and Craig Gillespie directed. Although James Gunn has final approval on all DC Studios projects, the intention was for Nogueira and Gillespie to bring a distinct style to the film.

As a big movie fan, I watched the Supergirl trailer and honestly, it feels very much like something James Gunn himself wrote and directed. Now, that wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if he had been involved in those roles! But since this is supposed to be the first DCU film he didn’t directly oversee, those strong similarities are a little worrying. It makes me wonder if all these movies will start to feel too much alike, and if the franchise is leaning too heavily on Gunn’s particular style.

One reason Guardians of the Galaxy was so successful for Marvel was James Gunn’s distinctive style. It felt very different from earlier Marvel films like Iron Man 3 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. It remains to be seen if the director of Supergirl will have the same creative freedom, but the trailer suggests they were asked to make a film in the style of James Gunn.

For the DC Universe to compete with the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it needs new and unique stories. While projects like Lanterns and Clayface suggest a move in that direction, the recent Supergirl movie doesn’t feel particularly original. It unfortunately follows a familiar formula we’ve seen in other superhero films.

The new Supergirl trailer would likely have drawn comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy regardless of who was running DC Studios. However, with James Gunn now in charge, those similarities feel more pronounced because of his direct involvement. There’s a concern that Gunn’s particular style could become the standard for all DC films, and that Supergirl’s approach feels like a safe, predictable choice rather than a creatively essential one.
