Supergirl Officially Explains The Ending Mystery from James Gunn’s Superman

The upcoming Supergirl movie, part of the DC Universe, will follow up on the character’s first appearance in the 2025 Superman film. While Superman primarily introduced David Corenswet as the new Man of Steel and other heroes, it also featured Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, setting the stage for her own solo movie later this year. The Supergirl trailer suggests a thrilling and fun space adventure with a surprisingly emotional core.

The movie is based on the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. It follows Supergirl as she helps a young woman named Ruthye Marye Knoll get revenge on a villain called Krem of the Yellow Hills. The story begins with Supergirl on a planet with a red sun, which weakens her and allows her to become intoxicated – as shown in the trailers. This sets the stage for a difficult time for the hero, and the comic gradually reveals the reasons why she’s struggling.

Supergirl Explains Why Kara Was Drunk In Superman

Even though Supergirl‘s story takes place after Superman‘s, the movie now explains why she was upset at the end. Kara is still dealing with the trauma of Krypton being destroyed and losing her family and everyone she knew. Unlike Superman, she wasn’t sent to Earth as a baby and therefore experienced much more of the planet’s destruction, including the extended hardship faced by those on Argo City – a detail also shown in the trailer.

This latest film version of the Maid of Might shows her struggling with pain and turning to alcohol to cope, as we first saw when she was isolated. This flawed and complicated portrayal reveals the depth of her suffering and how she’s trying to manage it, giving her brief appearance in Superman a much richer meaning.

The ending of the film, where Kara retrieves Krypto, Clark’s dog she was watching, really emphasizes their close relationship. The Supergirl trailer shows just how important Krypto is to her – even more so than in the Woman of Tomorrow comics, because the film includes more scenes of them together, both now and in the past. Krypto is her best friend and the place she truly feels at home. Their connection seems to be the main driving force of the story and the heart of the film, continuing the themes introduced at the end of Superman.

Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26th, 2026.
