Supergirl – TRAILER

A new version of the superhero?

After James Gunn’s Superman became the biggest superhero hit of 2025, the first trailer for Supergirl has been released. We briefly saw Supergirl at the end of Gunn’s film earlier this summer.

What we know about story from the Supergirl trailer

Okay, so the new Supergirl movie seems to be diving deep into a much grimmer backstory for Kara Zor-El. James Gunn has hinted that we’re going to see a very different origin story than Superman’s. While Superman had loving parents from the start, Kara apparently spent her first fourteen years on a fragment of Krypton, watching everything and everyone around her perish. It’s a much darker, more traumatic upbringing, and interestingly, this version of the story leans more into her original 1959 comic book roots, portraying her as a survivor of Argo City rather than Krypton itself. It’s a fascinating shift that promises a more complex and emotionally resonant character.

The cast….

Milly Alcock leads the cast as Kara Zor-El (the fifth live-action and third film actress to take on the role), alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Jason Momoa. Momoa returns to the DC universe, having previously played Aquaman, and has long hoped to play Lobo – a role he initially expected when first joining DC but was instead offered Aquaman.

Behind the scenes stories….

Craig Gillespie directed the movie, based on a script by Ana Nogueira. This version of the superhero is quite different from the 1980s film starring Helen Slater. Nogueira was initially working on a Supergirl spin-off connected to ‘The Flash,’ with Sasha Calle in the lead role, but that project was cancelled when James Gunn and Peter Safran became in charge of DC’s movie plans. She was then asked to write the screenplay for this new film.

Supergirl will be released in the UK on 26th June 2026
