The new trailer for DC’s Supergirl reveals that Milly Alcock’s character, Kara Zor-El, will gain a significant boost to a classic Superman ability. Interestingly, the original Superman wasn’t as powerful as he is today. He famously couldn’t fly, leading to the line about being able to leap tall buildings. Over time, Superman’s powers grew, eventually making him the incredibly strong hero we’re familiar with – a version first popularized by Christopher Reeve in the 1978 movie.
Superman’s heat vision, a power first hinted at in a 1939 comic book, has evolved significantly over the years. Initially, it wasn’t a separate ability, but rather an extension of his x-ray vision – he could melt things by maximizing that power. However, it quickly became its own distinct ability. Now, almost 50 years after Christopher Reeve famously displayed heat vision in the movies, the power is being reimagined again, thanks to the TV show Supergirl.
Supergirl Has a Very Different Approach to Heat Vision
The latest trailer for Supergirl shows Kara Zor-El battling the villain Krem and his gang. As you might guess, it’s not much of a fair fight – Kara quickly realizes they’re outmatched. However, Krem and his followers seem prepared to fight a Kryptonian, and a brief shot reveals Kara showing signs of Kryptonite poisoning, suggesting she’ll be vulnerable at some point.
Okay, so there’s this really cool moment around the 2:29 mark in the trailer that totally caught my attention. Supergirl uses her heat vision, but it’s not like anything we’ve seen before. Instead of just shooting heat, it’s more like a powerful energy blast – a kinetic blast, really. It sends this guy flying right through the side of a spaceship! That’s a huge shift for heat vision, and it makes me think she can control how much force it has, kind of like how Superman used to adjust his x-ray vision to create heat. It seems like she can dial up the power whenever she needs to.
The recent change to Superman’s powers was hinted at in James Gunn’s upcoming 2025 film. In that movie, a clone of Superman showed a version of heat vision that could physically push things – even knocking Superman off balance. There was also a scene where Superman used his heat vision to restrain the clone. However, this physical force wasn’t always present, which makes sense if it’s something that can be consciously controlled. It fits Supergirl’s personality – she’s often more aggressive and forceful – that she would choose to amplify the physical impact of her heat vision. It appears that Kryptonian powers are continuing to develop and change in these on-screen portrayals.
