The upcoming Supergirl movie is based on a beloved DC Comics story and appears to be an improvement on the source material. Following Milly Alcock’s introduction as Supergirl in the 2025 Superman film, Kara Zor-El will star in her own standalone movie this summer. This film will offer a unique take and a different hero compared to James Gunn’s Superman, and is an important part of building out the new DC Universe on the big screen.
The latest trailer for Supergirl offers a much clearer preview of the story. The movie is based on the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, created by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. The story follows Kara as she teams up with a girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley) on a quest for revenge against the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts). A key part of Kara’s journey involves Krypto, the superdog who first appeared in Superman.
Supergirl Is Giving Krypto A Bigger (& Better) Role Than The Woman Of Tomorrow Comics

Just like the original comic book story, the movie begins with Krypto getting poisoned by arrows from Krem. This sets Supergirl and Ruthye on a race against time – the trailer reveals Krypto has only three days to live – to find an antidote and save him. Their search takes them on an adventure across multiple planets, where they encounter different aliens and monsters. Interestingly, the movie adds a new character not found in the comics: Jason Momoa as Lobo, a tough, intergalactic biker and bounty hunter.
In the comic books, Krypto’s role is fairly limited. While Supergirl is motivated by saving him, he doesn’t appear again after the initial rescue – not even in memories – until the story’s conclusion. The new movie, however, expands Krypto’s part significantly, emphasizing the close and emotional connection between him and Supergirl. We’ll see much more of their relationship before the events that put him in danger, portraying him as her only real companion and a symbol of everything she’s lost.
The show will feature flashbacks showing Krypto as a cute puppy on Krypton, revealing how he became Kara’s companion and how important he’s been to her. These scenes will connect Krypto’s presence to Kara’s sadness and trauma from losing her home planet – a central theme of her story. By demonstrating how deeply Kara cares for Krypto, and encouraging the audience to feel the same way, the show will raise the emotional stakes and strengthen the story’s core.
This is a smart approach to expanding the Superman universe. Krypto was a highlight of the previous movie – many fans, including me, loved him the most! Building on that existing connection and linking Krypto directly to Supergirl will help audiences connect with her character faster, and we’ll get to see an incredibly adorable super-powered dog. Although James Gunn isn’t directing this film – Craig Gillespie is at the helm, with a script by Ana Nogueira – it definitely feels like something out of the Guardians of the Galaxy mold, and that’s a good thing.
Does Krypto Die In Supergirl? Comic Book SPOILERS Ahead
We know Ace the Bat-Hound will appear in memories, but it’s unclear if he’ll survive being poisoned. The trailer doesn’t offer much hope, and it seems risky to kill off such a beloved character. However, the comics series Woman of Tomorrow actually provide the answer to his fate.
It’s a relief that Krypto, thankfully, doesn’t die and is fully recovered by the story’s end. In fact, the whole situation wasn’t as serious as it seemed – it was largely a plan by Kara to spend time with Ruthye and help her learn some important lessons. Killing Krypto would be unforgivable, but it doesn’t seem likely the creators will go that route. Krypto is already a standout character in the DC Universe, and with the Super Family playing a key role in future stories, he’s likely to remain popular for years to come.
Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26th, 2026.
