The DC Universe is officially underway, and the upcoming Supergirl movie is generating a lot of buzz. The release of Superman in 2025 kicked off this new, interconnected DC universe, spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Gunn, as co-head of DC Studios and a writer/director, has become the main public face of the franchise, actively involved in all its projects. He recently clarified some early changes happening within the DCU, particularly regarding the introduction of the new live-action Supergirl.
The upcoming DCU movie was initially going to be called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but it’s now simply titled Supergirl. Some fans were surprised by the change, but James Gunn recently clarified the film’s direction in an interview with Variety, which explains the decision. Gunn stated they aren’t directly adapting the Woman of Tomorrow storyline, but rather using elements of it for the movie’s tone, structure, and overall approach. This builds on previous statements where Gunn expressed his desire to move away from typical superhero movie titles.
Why Supergirl’s Title Change Is Actually A Very Good Sign

Considering what James Gunn has said, the upcoming Supergirl movie in 2026 sounds really promising. He’s previously expressed a desire to do things differently with the DC Universe films, which is a good sign he wants to create something unique within the superhero genre. Now, his recent comments about Supergirl‘s story diverging from the traditional comics are even more exciting, suggesting a fresh take on the character.
I was so excited when the Supergirl trailer dropped, and the buzz is definitely real! But honestly, I was even more relieved to hear James Gunn say they weren’t strictly adapting one specific comic book storyline. It feels like that approach rarely works – the best superhero movies usually take inspiration from the comics, but aren’t afraid to tell their own stories. So, hearing that Woman of Tomorrow served as inspiration, rather than a direct blueprint, feels absolutely perfect to me. It suggests they’re aiming for something fresh and exciting, while still honoring the source material.
It’s definitely challenging to stand out in the crowded superhero landscape, but the DC Universe is already gaining traction thanks to the strong foundation laid by the 2025 Superman film. James Gunn’s clear vision for the DCU is encouraging, and his recent explanation of the Supergirl story is particularly important. It not only clarifies why the film’s title was changed, but also suggests it will be a key movie for the future of the DCU.
