AdHoc Studio announced that their first game, Dispatch, is selling much better than they anticipated.
The new episodic adventure game, a funny take on superheroes in the workplace, is expected to reach its three-year sales goal in just the first three months after release, according to Gamesindustry.biz.
Although the ultimate goal of the game remains a mystery, it has already achieved impressive sales, surpassing one million copies since it was released.
Last week, when the final episodes came out, the game hit a peak of over 220,000 players playing at the same time, according to SteamDB.
Originally, the studio predicted it would take three years to reach this goal, but it now appears they’ll achieve it much sooner than anticipated.
Executive producer Michael Choung explains they initially believed the project would be well-received. “We were confident people would like it,” he says, “but I don’t think anyone predicted just how successful it would become.”
AdHoc Studio has also said it’s vindication that the episodic model can work.
Choung explained that the team had extensive conversations about the best way to release Dispatch.
We were debating the best approach – should we release everything at once? Most people said that what we did was a bad idea, but it’s actually worked out really well. We’re not reinventing the wheel here; this method has been successful for TV shows for decades.
We believe success will largely depend on how well the new content is delivered, not the content itself. Dispatch successfully released two episodes each week for a month without any problems, demonstrating their ability to handle the rollout.
Many episodic games released in the past have struggled with uneven quality and unpredictable release schedules. But Dispatch appears to show that this format can succeed when handled well—although, ultimately, the game itself needs to be enjoyable.
It looks like Dispatch is really popular! Are you liking it? Please don’t share any spoilers in the comments.
