James Gunn’s upcoming *Superman* movie will be a significant moment for DC, directly connecting to the character’s origins. Officially called *Man of Tomorrow*, this sequel will further build the new DC Universe and establish David Corenswet as the definitive Clark Kent after his first appearance. This is particularly exciting considering all the other Kryptonian stories DC is currently developing.
The movie *Man of Tomorrow* was announced in September 2025 and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. This will be the first time DC has released three movies focusing on characters from the House of El in three years straight.
The revamped DC Universe began in cinemas with the release of *Superman* on July 11, 2025, featuring David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Following that, *Supergirl*, which director James Gunn has likened to one of his previous superhero films, is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026, starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. The year 2027 will continue the focus on the House of El with the premiere of *Man of Tomorrow*.
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) almost achieved a consistent Superman presence twice. Henry Cavill first starred as Superman in 2016’s *Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* and then again in 2017’s *Justice League*. He later made appearances in 2022’s *Black Adam* and 2023’s *The Flash*, and Clark Kent even had a brief, uncredited cameo in the first season of the *Peacemaker* series (2022). While Cavill reprised the role in 2021’s *Zack Snyder’s Justice League*, that film was only available to stream on HBO Max and wasn’t released in cinemas.
I always felt like the 80s nearly gave us a constant stream of Superman-related movies! We got *Superman II* and *Superman III* with Christopher Reeve in 1981 and 1983, and then just a year later, Helen Slater flew onto the scene with *Supergirl*. But it’s Warner Bros. Animation who *really* managed to pull it off consistently recently. From 2018 to 2020, they released *The Death of Superman*, *Reign of Superman*, and *Superman: Red Son* – three amazing animated films, one right after the other!
Just under two months after the release of *Superman*, a sequel, *Man of Tomorrow*, has been approved for production. David Corenswet will return as Clark Kent, and Nicholas Hoult will reprise his role as Lex Luthor, as they face a new, currently unknown, major villain.
Superman’s Impact on the DCU’s Future
Looking at the DC Universe’s plans beyond 2026, after *Peacemaker* Season 2 finishes, the story of Superman will be hugely important. With two Superman-focused movies planned in the next two years, David Corenswet, Rachel Alcock, and the rest of the cast will be central to the DCU’s success.
The next installment in the *Gods and Monsters* saga will be *Lanterns*, focusing on the Green Lanterns within the DC Universe. Following that, in September 2026, *Clayface* will be released, shifting the focus to Batman’s story. *Supergirl* is currently planned as the biggest DCU project of the following year, with a release scheduled for the peak of summer. More details about the genre of *Supergirl* are available elsewhere.
Currently, *Man of Tomorrow* is the only DC Universe project scheduled to come out in 2027. While more movies and shows will likely be added to the schedule – possibly including *Booster Gold*, the second season of *Creature Commandos*, and *Paradise Lost* – the *Superman* sequel is still expected to be DC Studios’ biggest release that year.
After the first *Superman* movie received positive reviews and did well in theaters, fans are hoping to see more characters from Krypton play a big role in future DC Studios projects.
