Superman Actor on Why Robot 4 Was Named Gary

In a recent reveal, actor Alan Tudyk discussed the origin of the name “Superman Robot #4” in James Gunn’s movie, and he talked about the surprising scene that made it to the final edit.

Alan Tudyk explains how Robot 4 was named Gary in Superman

During filming, Alan Tudyk came up with the name “Gary” for Superman Robot #4 on his own, which wasn’t included in the initial script. He shared this information with The Direct.

In simpler terms, Tudyk expressed that Corenswet, who portrays Superman, supported the idea of giving the character a name. Tudyk asked, “How about ‘Gary’?” and Gunn agreed with a slight hesitation, saying they would try it out during filming.

In an interesting twist, Alan Tudyk disclosed that his character’s name was initially just “Four” due to Superman creating poorly functioning earlier robots. As Tudyk put it, “The first one wasn’t great… It wasn’t until Four that he decided, ‘This is the leader, this is the one.'” On the spur of the moment, he named his character Gary, and only found out afterwards that the name stuck following the movie’s premiere.

As per Tudyk’s account, Gunn shared with him later on that there had been numerous discussions about the name choice, with the team debating if it was appropriate to inject humor into the situation or if they should stick with a purely emotional approach. In simpler words, according to Tudyk, Gunn mentioned that they were unsure whether it was the right moment for a joke and questioned if they should just end on a heartfelt note instead.

Tudyk explained they decided to keep the name for its “touching jest,” highlighting, “Superman adores that robot. That’s one reason why the robot is endearing. It’s loved by Superman, and thus, we as the audience also care for it.

Additionally, he mentioned that Nathan Fillion informed him of a particular scene where Superman addresses the robot as Gary, which Tudyk had unfortunately missed out on. This spontaneous act made it into the final version, lending a touch of sentimentality to the conclusion by showcasing Superman’s fondness for his creation.
