It’s always been a popular discussion to determine the strongest fictional hero, and that conversation often includes characters from anime. Goku, the incredibly powerful protagonist of Dragon Ball, is frequently compared to Superman in terms of sheer strength. There’s never been a clear winner, and probably won’t be – the debate will continue as long as fans love these characters. However, while Superman might always be considered incredibly strong, another famous anime hero has actually achieved something greater than him in a different area.
Monkey D. Luffy is the main character of One Piece, a hugely popular manga that’s been running for almost thirty years. Created by Eiichiro Oda, One Piece now has over 113 volumes and 1,100 chapters. It’s become incredibly successful, recently surpassing Superman to become the best-selling comic series of all time. Luffy is a major star for Shonen Jump and is arguably the second most famous anime character, right after Goku.
One Piece Manga Dethrones Superman in Total Sales

The official One Piece X account (@Eiichiro_Staff) just announced that the manga has sold over 600 million copies worldwide! This huge achievement will be celebrated in a new volume releasing this week. While Superman sales are also estimated around 600 million, One Piece has now surpassed that number. It took Superman over 80 years and more than 18,000 issues to reach 600 million, but One Piece achieved this milestone in a much shorter time – about a third of that!
This milestone further proves that One Piece is the most popular comic or manga of our time, and fans are even more excited for what’s coming in the story’s final arc. Of the 600 million copies printed, around 450 million are in Japan, with the other 150 million sold internationally. As more people around the world discover manga, One Piece could become the first comic series ever to sell a billion copies, possibly within the next ten to twenty years. While people still debate which anime character could beat Superman, Luffy has already surpassed him in one important way: by selling far more copies.
