Elizabeth Tulloch portrayed Lois Lane in ‘Superman & Lois’ on The CW for nearly eight years. With her long association with the iconic DC character, Tulloch discussed what has kept Lois timeless and relatable at a dog-friendly event for the new Superman movie, organized by Milk-Bone. Additionally, Tulloch spoke about the aspects of her Lois that made playing the character delightful, as well as her eagerness to witness Rachel Brosnahan’s portrayal of the chatty and ambitious reporter at The Daily Planet in James Gunn’s Superman.
In the TV series ‘Superman & Lois’, airing on The CW for four seasons, Tulloch described her character as not the typical damsel-in-distress type like Lois, always needing Superman to save her. Instead, she portrayed a more mature and competent Lois who was an accomplished reporter. This aspect of the character is one of the reasons Tulloch enjoyed playing this version of Lois.
Tulloch expressed her viewpoint that Jamal Khashoggi’s assassination underscored the perilous nature of journalism, which may account for why Lois Lane, a character renowned for her unwavering integrity, has continued to be relevant. She went on to say, “I believe anyone who practices journalism in 2025 deserves my admiration because it’s a complex era we’re living in. With the rise of AI and misinformation, I think we need journalists more than ever who are dedicated to uncovering the truth.” Reflecting on Lois Lane, she added, “I believe that’s what makes her so extraordinary, even after nearly 90 years.
Tulloch “Looking Forward” to Seeing Brosnahan’s Interpretation of Lois
Lois Lane’s journalistic drive is deeply ingrained in her character. In preparation for portraying this role, Brosnahan consulted with two investigative journalists as part of her research. Just like Tulloch’s interpretation of Lois, her character in Superman will confront the shifting landscape of journalism. Last year at the film’s trailer launch event, Brosnahan stated to the press that “today we find ourselves in a world where print journalism is seen by some as an endangered craft, and she’s someone who has devoted her entire life to it.
It’s not surprising at all that Tulloch is thrilled to see Brosnahan’s portrayal of Lois on the big screen. In fact, she shared, “I can’t wait to watch her bring the character to life.” She added, “Everyone who has played Lois thus far seems to grasp what makes her a beloved and intriguing figure… that fierce spirit and unwavering determination.
To Tulloch, Margot Kidder’s performance in Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman movie has always been the epitome of Lois Lane for him. Yet, considering the impressive reception of the recent Superman film, it appears that Brosnahan’s interpretation of the character could potentially match Kidder’s and bring satisfaction to Tulloch.
Superman releases in theaters tomorrow, July 11th.
