Superman: Man of Tomorrow Could Fix the Huge DCU Challenge James Gunn Admitted To

The upcoming sequel for Superman is brimming with challenges. It not only introduces a fresh take on the Man of Steel, deviating from previous iterations, but it also aims to delve deeper into Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, and Jimmy Olsen’s characters. Superman’s supporting cast plays a crucial role in enriching the movie’s narrative, leading it towards intriguing directions. Additionally, there’s another influential team contributing: the Justice League. Financially backed by Maxwell Lord, this group-comprising Mister Terrific, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl-operate independently, which conflicts with Superman’s principles.

As a staunch supporter, I’d rephrase that as follows: Even though he often clashes with his fellow heroes, the main character, Superman, doesn’t hesitate to reach out to them when he’s in dire straits. They rally to his aid, bringing an end to the chaos in Jahanpur and safeguarding innocent lives. Amidst all the turmoil, it’s easy to overlook that Superman is meant to assemble more than just the Justice Gang. Thankfully, James Gunn gets another opportunity to gather a team of extraordinary individuals in the upcoming film, Superman: Man of Tomorrow.

The Authority Is Already a Major Part of the DC Universe

In recent times, there’s been an overwhelming amount of superhero news, making it challenging to remember events from just last week, let alone those from a few years ago. But if we journey back in time, we discover that The Authority was initially slated to be one of the first films in the DC Universe (DCU). Similar to Gunn’s other comic book-inspired teams, The Authority consisted of characters who didn’t hesitate to push boundaries and act aggressively to accomplish their objectives. Members like Jenny Sparks, the Engineer, and Grifter rarely crossed paths with characters from the larger DC Universe, but Gunn envisioned them as key additions to his film roster. The excitement was palpable, even extending to the point where the Engineer made an appearance in Superman.

In the expansive DC Universe, where superhumans are abundant, non-powered villains like Lex Luthor feel compelled to find innovative ways to counteract them. For instance, he experimented with cloning Superman and implanting nanites into Angela Spica, allowing her to materialize whatever she imagines. The Engineer plays a crucial role in tarnishing Superman’s image by repairing and decoding the message his parents sent him from Krypton. However, her impact diminishes when Superman outmatches her at the end of his standalone film. Although we don’t learn about the Engineer’s fate in the final scene of Superman, it’s likely she’ll receive support while her superior serves time in prison.

Man of Tomorrow Can Get The Authority Train Back on Track

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but ponder about The Engineer’s potential return in the DC Universe, despite James Gunn’s hint that The Authority might not be moving forward. The complexities of movie development seem to have taken a toll on a franchise already spread thin across various projects, momentarily pushing it onto the sidelines. However, I find it premature to conclude that Gunn and his team are ready to call it quits. Instead, we’re looking at an intriguing shift towards Man of Tomorrow, where many of our beloved Superman cast members will return, albeit not in a traditional sequel setting. Instead, it seems like the narrative focus could be shifting towards Lex Luthor, offering up a whole new world of possibilities.

Generally speaking, it’s assumed that Luthor and his arch-enemy will put aside their differences when a fresh danger emerges, but this is rather clichéd. The DC Universe’s portrayal of Luther has such strong disdain for aliens that he finds it acceptable for the world to perish if it means eradicating one of them. With the Engineer making her appearance, there’s a possibility that Luthor may have tasked her to find others like herself and prepare for another encounter. The Authority could then prove to the world that Earth already has its guardians, eliminating the need for external aid. If all goes well and the response to Man of Tomorrow is favorable, DC Studios might reconsider their stance on The Authority. In fact, more superhero teams can never be a bad thing.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow hits theaters on July 9, 2027.
