Superman Officially Beats Both 2025 MCU Movies at the Box Office (Will Fantastic Four Be Competitive?)

In a nutshell, the first DC Studios film directed by James Gunn, known as Superman, has outperformed Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts at the box office. It managed to earn $235 million domestically in just one weekend, leaving Captain America’s $200 million and Thunderbolts’ $189 million behind. Internationally, it has raked in $165 million, pushing its total global earnings to an impressive $400.9 million, outstripping Thunderbolts’ worldwide total of $382 million.

*Note: There seems to be a mistake in the original text as there is no Marvel movie called “Thunderbolts.” However, I have kept the name as it appears in the source text for accuracy.

The upcoming DC Universe movie, set to debut on July 25, is predicted to surpass the global box office earnings of “Captain America: Brave New World” ($413.6 million), even facing competition from Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which anticipates domestic openings between $100 million and $110 million, trailing behind “Superman’s” $125 million, in terms of initial box office revenue.

Boosted by positive word-of-mouth reviews, earning an A- CinemaScore, the strongest performance for a live-action DC film since “The Batman” in 2022, and with an impressive 83% approval rating from critics and an astounding 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the latest Superman movie saw only a modest drop of 54%, earning $57.2 million during its second weekend.

The new movie has a firmer grip at the box office compared to “Captain America: Brave New World” (68%) and “Thunderbolts*” (56%). The latest Captain America film, which was without Chris Evans, scored a B- on CinemaScore, making it the lowest-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie among the 36 in total. On Rotten Tomatoes, it was only the third MCU film, following 2021’s “Eternals” and 2023’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, to be criticized. Contrastingly, “Thunderbolts*” received an A- on CinemaScore and a 88% positive review rating but ended up as one of the five lowest-grossing MCU films in its theatrical run.

In North America, the box office earnings of Superman have surpassed the domestic totals of every DC film released since The Batman in 2022. As of now, it has made an impressive $235 million, outdoing films like Black Adam ($168.2 million), Shazam! Fury of the Gods ($57.7 million), Blue Beetle ($72.5 million), The Flash ($108.1 million), Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom ($124.4 million), and Joker: Folie à Deux ($58.3 million).

First Steps, set to release next July and leading directly into Avengers: Doomsday in December 2026. This movie brings back Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as the Fantastic Four, opposite Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Meanwhile, DC Studios plans to release TV series Peacemaker on August 21 this year, followed by Lanterns in 2026. They also have films like Supergirl (June 2026), Clayface (September 2026), and The Batman: Part II (October 2027) in the pipeline.
