In simpler terms, the movie “Superman (2025)” by James Gunn concluded triumphantly. To emphasize the idea that discovering goodness in others is the true essence of punk rock, Gunn incorporated a song from renowned punk rock artist Iggy Pop into the emotional climax. The Teddybears’ cover of “Punkrocker,” sung by Iggy Pop, was played during the final scene of “Superman” and continued through the credits. This musical choice perfectly complements the ending and showcases one of Gunn’s notable talents as a director – skillfully crafting fitting soundtracks that enhance his storytelling emotions.
Fortunately for Gunn and Superman, Iggy Pop himself endorses it. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter during his European tour, Pop stated that he’s always felt “Punkrocker” has soul when asked about its use in Superman. He further declared that “Superman is the best friend one could ask for.

It seems that both Mr. Pop and many other Superman fans found themselves appreciating “Punkrocker” by the Teddybears, as reported by THR using data from Luminate, an entertainment industry platform. The song saw a significant surge in popularity during Superman’s film premiere. Streaming counts for the track skyrocketed, jumping from 1,572 on July 4 to almost 190,500 by July 12 – a tremendous increase, and there was still more time left in the weekend.
A track from the Superman soundtrack, specifically “5 Years Time” by Noah and the Whale, skyrocketed in popularity due to the Man of Steel. In the movie, it was used during Mister Terrific’s intense battle where he single-handedly defeated all LuthorCorp employees stationed outside Lex’s (Nicholas Hoult) pocket universe. This dramatic scene left Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) astonished as she watched from behind a protective force field. The song, with its bright and cheerful tone contrasting the continuous fight sequence, saw a significant increase in streams. From just 7,300 streams to 85,400 streams within the same week this month.
One of Gunn’s distinct traits as a director is his unique approach to soundtracks. The eclectic mix of classic 70s soul and rock tunes featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, such as the “Awesome Mix,” significantly contributed to the film’s phenomenal success in 2014. Moreover, it brought back into spotlight a few forgotten hits. The soundtrack for Superman is no exception; it’s edgy and subtly rebellious, just like its title character. It must have been quite an honor for Gunn, who was once the lead vocalist of a punk band called The Icons in the late 80s before transitioning into filmmaking, to have Iggy Pop endorse a song from his movie. This endorsement undoubtedly solidifies Superman’s persona as a “punk rock” icon in every sense of the word.
Superman is now playing in theaters.
