2025 is shaping up to be a fantastic year for Superman. James Gunn’s Superman movie was a hit, and the Superman and Action Comics comic books have consistently been excellent, especially with top creators working on them. There’s a big event called DC K.O. celebrating the character, and we’ve seen several miniseries this year exploring different facets of Superman, including the one we’re discussing today. Superman Red & Blue Special #1 is a follow-up to the acclaimed Superman Red & Blue miniseries, which brought together some of the best comic book creators to tell stories about the original superhero. Even in a year filled with great Superman stories, this special stands out as something truly exceptional.
The Superman Red & Blue Special #1 features four unique stories, each offering a fresh perspective on Superman. “Priceless,” by Paul Dini and Mirka Andolfo, is a fun science fiction adventure where Superman must rescue Supergirl from an alien prison using a rare crystal. Michael Walshâs “All the Time in the World” is a heartwarming look at a typical day for the worldâs greatest hero. “Out of the Ordinary” by Dan Abnett and Caitlin Yarksy tells the story of Superman saving a small town and connecting with a fellow journalist. Finally, “Red-Letter Days” by Rainbow Rowell and Cian Tormey highlights Supermanâs wonderful supporting characters, especially Lois Lane, in a charming tale.
While each story has its merits, I particularly enjoyed âAll the Time in the Worldâ and âRed-Letter Days.â Itâs tough to choose between them! âAll the Time in the Worldâ beautifully balances Supermanâs heroic side with his human side, really focusing on his character and using emotion effectively. âRed-Letter Daysâ is a fantastic Lois Lane story. Lois has always been a compelling character, and this one does a great job of highlighting an often-overlooked aspect of her life â her work as a journalist. The final part, showing Lois and Clark as reporters, is especially strong.
While “Priceless” and “Out of the Ordinary” are enjoyable stories, they don’t quite reach the same emotional impact as the other two. Both stories do a good job of exploring different sides of Superman â his heroic nature and his personal life. “Priceless” is a fun, heartwarming story that shows Superman’s dedication to protecting people and his loved ones. “Out of the Ordinary” also balances his superpowers with his humanity, and it’s well-done, but it doesn’t pack the same emotional punch as “All the Time in the World.” Although these stories seem similar at first, they actually approach the subject matter in unique and different ways.
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
| Pros | Cons |
| Each story perfectly talks about different facets of Superman | It might have been better if âPricelessâ wasnât the first story; itâs immediately overshadowed by the next story |
| The art is fantastic in every story, the red and blue color gimmick making it even better | |
| It uses a Superman familiar to fans of the movie, making it perfect for new readers |
Superman Red & Blue Special #1 Looks Fantastic

The art is a major strength of Superman Red & Blue Special #1. While good art is always important in comics, this issueâs use of primarily red and blue creates a unique and striking visual style. The art in âAll the Time in the Worldâ is particularly beautiful and effectively conveys emotion. While âPricelessâ is still visually impressive, it doesnât quite reach the same heights as the other stories, and its use of more colors feels different from the issueâs signature red and blue palette. Itâs less that itâs bad, and more that the other storiesâ art is simply exceptional.
âOut of the Ordinaryâ effectively conveys the storyâs themes through its strong visuals and compelling narrative, particularly by highlighting different facets of Supermanâs character. Itâs surprisingly engaging to see him in everyday situations, like simply having a coffee, largely because these moments are so uncommon. âRed-Letter Daysâ cleverly utilizes its color scheme, employing a significant amount of red to create a distinctive visual style. While Iâve always appreciated Tormeyâs artwork, I believe this story showcases his best work yet.
The Superman Red & Blue Special #1 is a truly beautiful comic. Itâs remarkable how each creative team manages to reveal Supermanâs inner emotional life. It feels like a perfect moment for this story to arrive, as Superman has been attracting new readers to comics. This special really explores the potential of a Superman story, focusing on emotional depth that isnât always present in his adventures. Itâs a great read for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
