Curious fans are asking about the exact location of the iconic city, Metropolis, from the Superman comic book universe. The director James Gunn’s latest Superman production has finally provided an answer to this long-standing question. Some viewers might have overlooked a subtle hint in the film that reveals where Metropolis is situated.
So, here’s everything we know about DCU’s Metropolis location.
Where is DCU’s Metropolis in located in the US in Superman?
In the latest Superman movie, it’s me who notices a subtle detail that hints at Metropolis’ location – Lois Lane’s car’s license plate. To my surprise, it bears a Delaware registration, suggesting that our beloved city is nestled in the state of Delaware itself. Interestingly enough, this mirrors the comic book version of Metropolis being set in Delaware as well.
Prior to the 1970s, the fictional cities within the DC universe were not systematically positioned on any map. However, a movement towards more coherent storytelling and geography emerged in the 1970s. In the 1977 publication of The Amazing World of DC Comics #14, DC decided to place Metropolis in Delaware and Gotham City across the bay in New Jersey for a more consistent setting.
In World’s Greatest Superheroes, Paul Kupperberg reinforced the connection between Gotham and established a clear contrast with Metropolis, two cities geographically near yet fundamentally different from one another.
The storyline “Crisis on Infinite Earths” established consistent settings, and more recently, the DC Universe has suggested a significant link to Delaware, as reported by ComicBook.com.
What city is Superman’s Metropolis based on?
In previous Superman films, Metropolis has been portrayed as being similar to New York City, often referred to as the Big Apple in other adaptations. So far, this is the most common representation. However, it’s important to note that geographically, Metropolis doesn’t actually exist – it’s fictional. It could be inspired by New York, but it could draw inspiration from Delaware or any other city as well. In Zack Snyder’s version, the city appeared to resemble Chicago more than New York.
Although James Gunn’s portrayal of Superman deviates slightly from the original comics, as he sets Metropolis in Delaware instead of its traditional location, this choice leaves some room for ambiguity since the city is fictional.
Superman is now playing in the theatres.
