Superman Secretly Breaks An Incredible James Gunn Record

In 2025’s “Superman”, one of James Gunn‘s frequent collaborators made an extraordinary achievement that might have gone unnoticed. Known for his consistent work with recurring actors, such as Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn (his brother), Jennifer Holland, and others, these performers have graced multiple projects helmed by Gunn. Interestingly, all of these talents are part of the revamped DC Universe, but a different collaborator of his outshone them all by claiming the leading role in “Superman”.

In the latest project, Superman, James Gunn teamed up with writer, director, and performer Stephen Blackehart. In this film, Blackehart played the lead scientist of Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), Sydney Happersen. Gunn and Blackehart have a long history of working together on multiple projects – a total of 20 collaborations to be exact. Out of these, Gunn has cast, written, produced, and/or directed Blackehart in 15 different projects. This makes Blackehart the most frequent collaborator of James Gunn, with Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn having been directed by Gunn in ten projects each, while Nathan Fillion has appeared in eight, and Mikaela Hoover (who plays Cat Grant in Superman) has starred in six.

In 1996, James Gunn and Stephen Blackehart first teamed up for the production of “Tromeo and Juliet,” which was Gunn’s debut feature film where he served as writer and assistant director alongside Lloyd Kaufman (known for “The New Corners” and “The Toxic Avenger”). This version, a loose interpretation of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” saw Blackehart play Benny Que, a character inspired by Romeo’s cousin, Benvolio, from the original play. This role marked the beginning of Blackehart’s long-lasting collaboration with Gunn.

In addition to working together on productions such as “Tromeo and Juliet” (2003), “The Ghouls”, “LolliLove”, “Super”, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” trilogy, James Gunn and Michael Rooker have often collaborated. Given their strong bond, it’s highly probable that this partnership will persist as the revitalized DC Universe expands. There’s a chance that Michael Rooker could become a frequent character in the franchise. Rooker’s character, Sydney Happersen, has been Lex Luthor’s chief scientist and assistant since his debut in “Superman (Vol. 2) #2” from 1987. If the live-action DCU follows suit, this dynamic could also be maintained.

The initial movie within the revamped DC Universe was “Superman,” coming after the previous year’s animated “Creature Commandos” series on HBO Max. The universe is set to expand with upcoming releases like “Peacemaker” season 2, “Supergirl,” “Lanterns,” “Clayface,” and others. This growth opens up possibilities for Lex Luthor and his associates to reappear, potentially bringing Stephen Blackehart back into the DCU to carry on his successful partnership with James Gunn.
