James Gunn’s interpretation of Superman has a punk vibe, yet the film’s music, reminiscent of John Williams, maintains a traditional feel. The music for this movie is created by John Murphy, who collaborated with Gunn on The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, along with David Fleming, known for Wonder Woman 1984 and Dune: Part Two. The film’s soundtrack is grand, epic, emotional, and heroic. Upon examining the Superman soundtrack tracklist provided below, fans might observe that only two songs are included in the 33-track playlist: “5 Years Time” by Noah and the Whale, and “Punkrocker” (featuring Iggy Pop) by Teddybears.
James Gunn’s iconic playlists from the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy were brimming with ’60s and ’70s classics, while his soundtracks for The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker featured tracks like Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Died,” and, in his HBO Max series, Wig Wam’s “Do Ya Wanna Taste It?” and songs from the ’80s hair metal era.
In the upcoming “Superman” (releasing July 11), Gunn aimed to blend Williams’ timeless, majestic Superman melody from the 1978 Richard Donner film as a nod to the past, while still allowing Murphy’s compositions to create a unique sonic identity for the modern Man of Steel.
During a press event in December, Gunn explained, “I expressed my desire to incorporate a variation of the Williams theme, but I wanted to create our unique take on it. And that’s what you can listen to in the film. What’s fascinating is how it seamlessly connects with other pieces, some of which are reminiscent of the Williams theme, while others are purely John Murphy’s creation. It transitions wonderfully throughout the movie.
Gunn additionally created Spotify playlists influenced by the personas of Superman, containing tracks not heard in the film. Lois Lane’s punk playlist encompasses Against Me’s “I Was a Teenage Anarchist” and PUP’s “DVP,” while Clark Kent exhibits a positive yet slightly edgy music preference with Spoon’s “The Underdog” and Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle.” Lex Luthor’s girlfriend, Eve Teschmacher, who takes selfies frequently, enjoys pop tunes by Taylor Swift (“Shake It Off”) and Olivia Rodrigo (“bad idea right?”).
