For over five decades, John Williams has been highly valued and productive in cinema’s music world, yet it could be said that there is no period in his career more impressive than his extraordinary run during the 1970s, particularly the mid to late years.
During the three-year period spanning from 1975 to 1978, Williams composed the scores for Jaws, Star Wars, and Superman – along with several others. These timeless musical pieces continue to be some of the most recognized and influential tunes in popular culture history.
In other words, it’s not unexpected that the soundtrack for James Gunn’s reimagining of Superman heavily references the original score, especially as the main theme is frequently played during significant scenes throughout the movie.
The composition, penned by Gunn’s frequent partner John Murphy in collaboration with David Fleming, is included within a fresh score. The complete track listing for this score can be found beneath.
Indeed, Gunn has a knack for incorporating popular and rock tunes into his movies’ soundtracks, and this is especially evident in the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
In this movie, while he hasn’t repeated it as much, you can still identify a few familiar melodies, along with an original tune written by Gunn and sung by the fictional band The Mighty Crabjoys. This song is played during the ending credits.
