Actress María Gabriela de Faría is all set to debut in the DC Universe for the first time as The Engineer (Angela Spica) in James Gunn’s upcoming movie “Superman”. In an interview with ComicBook, she discussed the rigorous process of preparing for this intricate role. Angela Spica is a key member of the super-team called The Authority, and her powers are based on nanotechnology, enabling her to interact and control machinery. Given the unique nature of this character, creating an authentic portrayal demanded a thorough creative approach, which she worked closely with director Gunn to develop. Her appearance in the film is anticipated to serve as a significant milestone for the DCU, paving the way for The Authority’s future cinematic outing.
De Faria shared with us that, as part of her character development, she began working on it at the gym during training. “I had been preparing for this role eight months prior to filming,” she explained. “Going through these rigorous workouts helped me mentally prepare. I spent three hours a day at the gym and would send James videos, showing him how I thought my character might move. It felt like her body was heavy.” This physical change mirrored the internal turmoil of her character, a struggle between her natural self and her acquired skills.
As Faría put it, “The more someone engages with machines, the more they start to resemble one.” He added, “I sense a bit of humanity slipping away each time this happens. Inside her, I see a constant struggle between her machine-like self and her human side that yearns to stay present. Her humanity has feelings, a conscience, and compassion. So when she needs to work for Lex and achieve what she believes is best for mankind, her human side recedes. It’s the machine that takes over. This story is about the struggle and how it feels within her.
As I immerse myself within the machine, I can’t help but wonder if it’s tickling or being pricked. It’s an entirely novel sensation, leaving me puzzled – “What is this?” Those were my thoughts while breathing life into the Engineer in Superman, as de Faría recalls. Collaborating with James was a unique journey, and together we crafted the creative process of portraying such an intriguing, mechanical character.
In the work by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch on The Authority, it’s mentioned that Angela Spica derives her abilities from nine pints of mechanical liquid instead of regular blood. This advanced nanotechnology grants her amazing feats, including building intricate gadgets from her physique, generating protective barriers, and effortlessly communicating with all types of technology. The feeling of using these powers is deeply ingrained in her everyday life.
Will The Engineer Have a Future in the DCU?
During the interview, de Faría also admitted that she has engaged in conversations regarding the future arc of her character within the DC Universe, although specifics are still under wraps. “James Gunn gives me hints,” she shared. “I ask and he keeps sending me wink emojis. He says, ‘I have a fantastic idea.'” The actress appeared enthusiastic about the prospects, humorously adding, “And I say, ‘Alright, as long as I make it to Peacemaker Season 3, even just a small part.’
Initially slated for production by James Gunn in January 2023 under his personal interest, the DCU movie titled “The Authority” has been put on hold and is no longer being actively developed. This change is attributed to the unique obstacles faced during development, as Gunn mentioned the challenge of making this project stand out amidst a landscape filled with ultra-violent superhero shows like “The Boys” and “Invincible“. Although The Authority has not been cancelled, it’s possible that it could be transformed into an animated production down the line. Despite this setback for The Authority, de Faría is anticipated to reprise his role as the Engineer in a future project.
Superman is scheduled to fly into theaters on July 11th.
