Superman Star Talks About Surprising Post-Credit Scene Change (What Could It Mean?)

Note: The following may contain spoilers about Superman’s post-credits scene. In an interesting twist, one of the funniest moments from Superman didn’t appear until after the credits ended. According to actor Edi Gathegi, this scene was initially intended to be part of the main storyline but was moved to the post-credits instead. In an interview with Variety, Gathegi shared that the scene featuring his character and Superman (David Corenswet) outside a crooked Metropolis building was originally in the movie, but he wasn’t involved in the final editing decision. However, he appreciated the change as it added depth to an otherwise minor moment, transforming it into a memorable ending scene or ‘stinger.’ This alteration could hint at bigger plans for Superman, particularly with rumors circulating about a potential Mister Terrific TV series.

In his words, “That scene was originally from the movie,” Gathegi stated. “I wasn’t involved in the decision-making process, but for me, it’s thrilling because it hints at something more. Whether DC plans to fulfill this promise is uncertain, but having that moment towards the end of the film feels like a complete circle for me. I was unceremoniously killed before the major battle in X-Men: First Class, and now, I find myself as the last one standing.

Although Gathegi seems casual about his past comic book setbacks, his part in Superman signifies a significant enhancement in screen presence. Mister Terrific assumes a crucial secondary role in the movie’s climax, employing his intelligence to aid Superman in sealing the dimensional breach instigated by Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). In the scene following the credits, the two heroes examine the wreckage, focusing on a distorted structure that Mister Terrific helped restore with his technical know-how. When Superman notes an imperfection, Terrific exits in annoyance, kicking a stone in annoyance. This scene serves as both a humorous moment and a character development, highlighting the hero’s perfectionism and foreshadowing his future within the DCU.

Edi Gathegi’s DCU Future Is Uncertain

In the film Superman, Gathegi’s portrayal of Mister Terrific is noteworthy, but it doesn’t delve into the hero’s backstory. As Gathegi discovered from the comic book lore, “He experienced the loss of his wife, teetered on the edge of suicide, was visited by The Spectre who informed him about the previous Mister Terrific, Terry Sloan, and he assumed the role himself.” Since then, Mister Terrific utilizes his extensive skillset to combat crime. This arsenal includes “Fourteen PhDs, fluency in multiple languages, broad knowledge across various fields, self-taught abilities, innate talent for talents, Olympic athlete.

In essence, Gathegi clarified that the new DC Universe narrative centers around Superman, implying that there wasn’t much space in this story to explore Mister Terrific’s past. He mentioned that hopefully, future projects will allow for a deeper understanding of Mister Terrific’s character, suggesting that our current glimpses are merely the tip of the iceberg. Gathegi also disclosed that he has secured a multi-project agreement with DC Studios, but emphasized that nothing is set in stone.

He clarified that although he’s part of a complex project involving multiple stories, the details are still unclear to him. What James emphasizes is that they won’t start production without a polished script, meaning the plans for his characters don’t matter until the draft is ready and can be filmed. So, he doesn’t jump to conclusions or get too excited about it before anything concrete happens. He wants to play a significant role in this world, but whether that happens or not depends on time, faith, and other people’s dedication.

Superman is currently playing in theaters.
