Superman Treasury 2025: A Hero for Every Age”
In this issue #1, we delve into the world of Superman, a comic book that appeals to both newcomers and long-time fans alike. The narrative unfolds as an unknown alien invasion ravages Earth, capturing Superman and subjecting him to a mental trap. In this illusionary reality, he witnesses what life could be without Superman.
One of the initial scenes in this alternate universe takes place in Smallville, where we see the Kent family, including Clark’s friends Lana Lang, Pete Ross, and Lex Luthor, experience a heart-wrenching loss – the demise of Pa Kent. Although the scene carries a familiar tone, it is Jonathan Kent who meets his end at the hands of a tornado that strikes the Kent farmstead.
As a die-hard movie buff, especially when it comes to Superman, I must say that this moment strongly echoes one of the most debated scenes from “Man of Steel.” The portrayal of Superman in the DCEU has sparked quite a heated debate among Superman and DC fans. While some adore the version of Superman presented in these films, others argue it strays too far from the Superman they have admired for years. Interestingly, “Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All” #1 presents a Superman that is perfect in its own right, and it’s intriguing to see them take inspiration from this specific scene, yet offering something quite different from the Superman of the Snyder movies.
The Death of Jon Kent in the DCEU Was the Icing on Man of Steel‘s Terrible portrayal of Superman’s Adopted Father
Fans of Superman comics often criticize the movie “Man of Steel” for its portrayal of Jonathan Kent, particularly his death scene. In the comics, Jonathan teaches Superman to use his powers for good and help others. However, in “Man of Steel,” Jonathan teaches Clark to hide his abilities from the world as a means of protection. This contrast is problematic because these two versions of Jonathan Kent are fundamentally different. The death of Jonathan Kent in “Man of Steel” is often considered one of the most illogical moments in cinematic Superman history for several reasons.
For instance, when a tornado threatens a bus full of children, Jonathan instructs Clark to leave rather than use his powers to save everyone. This moment is questionable because Clark could have effortlessly saved the kids without revealing himself to the world. The death of Jonathan Kent in “Man of Steel” misses the essence of every other Jonathan Kent death in Superman media, which is usually a heart attack that serves as a lesson for Superman about his limitations and responsibility.
The death scene in “Man of Steel” is emotionally manipulative and fails to convey the intended message. It does not align with the typical reasoning behind Jonathan’s death, and it seems illogical within the context of Clark Kent’s abilities. In essence, the death of Jonathan Kent in “Man of Steel” can be described as foolish or senseless, lacking any form of intelligence or rationality.
Superman Treasury 2025: A Hero for All #1 reimagines key elements from the Man of Steel scenario in an innovative manner. In this tale, Superman finds himself ensnared by telepaths within a fabricated reality, preventing him from aiding Earth’s heroes in repelling an impending attack. As Clark Kent, he lacks his powers, and when a tornado strikes, he can only follow the crowd into the storm shelter. Regrettably, Jonathan is the one left behind; though he manages to guide others to safety with his warning, he himself succumbs. He saves Martha, Clark, Pete, Lana, and Lex through his quick wit, but cannot save himself. This tragic event mirrors Jonathan’s heart attack death in Man of Steel—an incident Clark is unable to prevent and feels partially responsible for due to his inability to intervene. The comic effectively employs every facet of Superman’s character to craft its narrative, achieving what the original Man of Steel death scene aimed for while underscoring the selfless nature of Jonathan Kent—a man who would risk everything, including his own life, to safeguard his family.
Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All #1 Does Everything That the Man of Steel Didn’t
As an ardent supporter of Superman for many years, I hoped to enjoy the film “Man of Steel,” but I found that it misrepresented the Superman mythos far more than those who praised it as comic-accurate (often being Snyder’s DC fans who may not have even read comics) could imagine. One of the puzzling scenes from the movie was Jonathan Kent’s death, which deviated significantly from any other portrayal of this character. This scene remains the most disappointing moment in a film that left a lasting negative impact on the public’s perception of Superman in popular culture.
Title #1 of “Superman Treasury 2025: Hero for All” reworks key elements from the “Man of Steel” scene – a tornado, people in distress, and Jonathan Kent. Instead of featuring one of the least thoughtfully written scenes in a film riddled with them (remember when Superman allowed a tanker truck to explode as it hit a building populated with civilians?), this version constructs a narrative that carries an emotional weight and imparts a valuable lesson – that he can’t save everyone.
